In 2016 they suffered some extremely painful fourth quarter losses, and could have easily seen its 5-win season turn into a .500 win season with just a handful of better bounces in their favor.
This year they’ll come into the season with a new temporary venue to call home, and a squad that’s more talented than last year’s record indicates.
Whether there’s enough to climb out of the basement of the incredibly deep AFC West is yet to be seen.
2017 Los Angeles Chargers Predictions: Roster Changes
The Chargers’ offensive line has needed some attention for years, so it wasn’t surprising to see the team’s marquee offseason signing was veteran left tackle Russell Okung, who they lured away from the rival Denver Broncos.
Okung didn’t come cheap, as he signed a four-year, $53 million contract to head West, but he fills a glaring need for the Chargers.

That wasn’t the end of the attention paid to the offensive line. The team then added Western Kentucky’s Forrest Lamp in the second round of the draft, as well as Indiana’s Dan Feeney in the third round.
And that’s not to overlook the seventh overall selection – wide receiver Mike Williams out of Clemson.
The team also refreshed the coaching staff in the offseason. Head coach Mike McCoy is gone, as is defensive coordinator John Pagano.
They’ve been replaced by new head coach Anthony Lynn, formerly with the Bills, and new defensive coordinator Gus Bradley, formerly with the Jaguars, and before that, the defensive coordinator with the Seahawks.
2017 Los Angeles Chargers Predictions: Offense
There are no excuses for the Chargers this season. There is a ton of talent on offense at each of the skill positions, with Antonio Gates returning for another season, Williams and Keenan Allen offering a ton of potential at wide receiver, and Melvin Gordon in the backfield.

Danny Woodhead was a real help to Rivers as a safety valve behind those leaky offensive lines, but with that group shored up, Rivers can go back to what he does best, and that’s aggressively thrown the ball down the field.
With Gordon being a legitimate threat on the ground behind this revamped offensive line, that should only up things up for Rivers through the air.
2017 Los Angeles Chargers Predictions: Defense
Defensive end Joey Bosa was a huge boost to the Chargers defense when he got on the field eventually after a lengthy rookie contract dispute, so his help for a full year will be crucial.
Lynn and Bradley will surely give this defense a new look from what we’ve seen in recent years, though there are a lot of holes they’ll need to cover up.
2017 Los Angeles Chargers Handicapping: (Strengths/Weaknesses)
The depth the Chargers have in their pass-catching corps is going to give opposing defenses fits, and Rivers certainly has some good years in him yet.
Couple that with Gordon on the ground and an offensive line that can actually give this unit some time to work should lead to some high-scoring efforts.

It’s tough to look at the Chargers and not expect the injury bug to pop its ugly head out at some point.
Gordon didn’t finish last season, Allen’s missed more football than he’s played the last two seasons, and Williams is already dealing with a potentially long-term back injury.
2017 Los Angeles Chargers Prediction (Final Record): 7-9
A bounce back seems to be in the cards for the Chargers, but the AFC West is just too deep and talented for them to be considered a legitimate threat for a playoff spot. It’d be wise to pass on the Chargers when putting money down on all futures bets.
