West Virginia Mountaineers
The Big-12 mutilation tipped off last week and West Virginia avoided a loss. That’s all it’s about in a conference where at least three or four good teams, maybe even ranked teams, will lose every week. Texas Christian, Baylor and Texas all bit the dust in their first game.

Road victories are even more special and West Va. has one of those, too. There’s a decent shot it will have two after the first day of 2018 with a trip to Manhattan, Kansas. The Mountaineers are about six points better than the Wildcats, per KenPom. It would be huge to get two road wins to start the conference, even if they are against two of the weaker conference foes.
Esa Ahmad can’t come back until at least Jan. 9 and it’s unclear whether or not he will return by then. West Virginia is already among the top contenders to take down Kansas without him. When he comes back, it will be the primary challenger. He may only miss two more games, this one included.
Kansas State Wildcats
Kansas State is a top-40 KenPom team, yet it’s a virtual afterthought in the Big-12. It’s got the 24th-best offensive efficiency in the country and a defense that isn’t bad either, at #66.
The Wildcats are in the top half of the conference after beating Iowa State, which is expected to be the worst team in the conference at #88 in KenPom’s rankings.

K-State only has two losses this season: by two points against Arizona State and seven points against Tulsa. The ‘Cats don’t have many impressive wins, the best being at Vanderbilt (#73 KenPom).
Three scorers average a sliver under 15 points per game: Barry Brown (14.9), Kamau Stokes (14.8) and Dean Wade (14.8). They give the offense a balanced look. More importantly against West Virginia, the offense only turns it over 11 times per game.
CBB Betting Trends:
- WVU are 2-6-1 ATS in their last 9 vs. Big 12.
- KSU are 2-7 ATS in their last 9 games overall.
- Head to Head: Over is 9-3 in the last 12 meetings.
Free West Virginia vs. Kansas State NCAAB Prediction: Kansas State wins at home.
It’s the Big-12. I really like West Virginia but it’s been playing just a bit over its head without Ahmad and it may not survive this one.
