The Big 12 Conference schedule gets properly underway this weekend, as highly-ranked Texas Tech hosts pesky Kansas State in Lubbock on Saturday afternoon. K-State always brings a workmanlike approach to the game, but the visitors might need a bit more than that in order to be successful in the Lone Star State.
Kansas State
The Wildcats, always a plucky competitor come March Madness time, have already racked up 10 wins in their non-conference schedule in 2018. If you throw out a miserable 47-46 loss to Tulsa (what is this, high school ball?) and a 20-point drubbing at the hands of Texas, the Wildcats have played well this season.
The 46-point output against the Hurricanes is concerning, because there’s no way a team stands a chance against a good outfit like Texas Tech if they score so infrequently. The ‘Cats bring a very democratic scoring load, with double-digit point getters Dean Wade, Barry Brown Jr., Xavier Sneed and Kamau Stokes playing key roles. No one on that list is over 14 PPG, and no one under 11.

K-State’s bread and butter is its defense; the Wildcats rank an amazing eighth in the country in points against, yielding just 58.5 per game. It’s the suffocating effort in their end that will bear fruit if the Wildcats are to pull off an upset against the Red Raiders.
Texas Tech Red Raiders
The Raiders, always a team of interest on the hardcourt ever since iconic coach Bobby Knight was on the bench in Lubbock, have looked good thus far.
Texas Tech is currently ranked 11th in the nation in the Coaches’ poll, with quality wins against West Virginia (on the road), Nebraska, Memphis and USC. The only blemish for the Raiders is a loss against Duke, and they can hardly be blamed for that.

Tech is led by Jarrett Culver, a local sophomore jack-of-all-trades that has put up 19.7 PPG, 5.6 rebounds per and 4.2 assists per game. Matt Mooney is also a critical piece, a senior that chips in scoring and tenacious defense, averaging over two steals a game.
But, and this bears worth mentioning the most, the top hallmark for this team is the watertight defense. The Red Raiders surrender less than 53 points per game, an amazing figure that is good for second in the country. The visiting Wildcats have difficulty putting the ball in the hoop at the best of times, against Tech’s stingy defense, it should be even more of a monumental task.
Free Kansas State Wildcats vs. Texas Tech Red Raiders NCAAB Prediction:
Saturday afternoon’s game in north Texas could certainly be a low-scoring affair. Both teams feature Top 25-ranked defenses, and K-State has scrappy scoring production to begin with. The Wildcats’ rather ragtag bunch should find it tough sledding in hostile territory and facing such a suffocating ‘D’.
If the home team can keep defending at the rate it currently is, then Texas Tech is going to be a serious competitor in the NCAA tournament. Kansas State usually gives an opponent a tough game, but the visitors likely don’t stand a chance this weekend against the Red Raiders.
4* Free CBB Betting Pick: Texas Tech by 10
Tech’s Culver will get his buckets, and he and Mooney should be enough in what should be a grinding affair at the United Supermarkets Arena.
