The Iowa Hawkeyes are an interesting team coming into this year’s NCAA tourney. This is a squad that could legitimately make a run to the Sweet 16 or beyond – or get beat by a dozen Friday vs. Cincinnati.
The Bearcats definitely drew a travel advantage in the South Regional, making the 100 mile jaunt to Columbus, OH for the weekend. Proximity alone doesn’t win ball games however and the Hawkeyes are an incredibly experienced group that is going to be ready to fight.
Iowa Hawkeyes
The Hawkeyes have looked like both world beaters and a dumpster fire at times this season. Unfortunately for Iowa fans it’s been the latter lately as he Hawks dropped 5 of 6 to wind down the season. Iowa beat a tired Illinois team to kick of their conference tournament but was then dominated by 53-74 to Michigan in their next outing.
Iowa does have a 16 point win over the Wolverines during the regular season and they also beat Big 12 conference tourney champ Iowa State by 14 earlier in the year. The Hawks also upended Pac 12 tournament champion Oregon back in mid-November so they’ve got a solid pedigree.

Despite their up and down season, the Hawkeyes do have some talent. Even though the Hawkeyes haven’t made the NCAA’s since 2016, they do have an experienced squad that returned 4 starters from last year as well as a solid freshman in Joe Weiskamp.
6’9″ F Tyler Cook is the type of player that can fuel a first round upset over Cincinnati. He averaged 14.9 and 7.9 during the regular season and has a solid front court running mate in Luka Garza who dumped in 25 points in the regular season finale. Jordan Bohannon also added 20 points on 4-10 from three point range on March 10th to give Iowa a solid inside-out combo.
Cincinnati Bearcats
The Bearcats upset #11 Houston to win the AAC tournament on Sunday. It’s not like Cincinnati is wearing any Cinderella slippers as the team was 28-6 on the season. It was an impressive year for Mick Cronin and his staff but one largely devoid of any signature wins.
Cincinnati was favored in 22 of the first 23 games they played this season. The Bearcats thrived on their defense this season, ranking 12th points allowed per game. Once again, is that a sign of solid defenders or a result of the competition?

Time will tell just how solid the Cincinnati defense is because Iowa likes to stretch the pace and their own mantra is ‘defense optional.’ The Hawkeyes averaged nearly 80 points per game playing in the tough Big 10 conference.
The biggest benefactor of Iowa’s lax defensive approach is going to be Cincinnati’s Jarron Cumberland who had 33 vs. Houston last Sunday. Cumberland averages 18.8 per game. 6’11” Nysier Brooks will also be counted on to combat Iowa’s size down low.
CBB Betting Trends:

Free Iowa Hawkeyes vs. Cincinnati Bearcats NCAAB Prediction:
The Bearcats are in the NCAA’s for the 9th straight year and they’ve won at least a game in all but one of those seasons. Iowa has an experienced lineup, but hasn’t been to the tourney since 2016. When you combine the Bearcats familiarity with postseason play as well as the definitive travel / in-state advantage it’s looking like a rout for Cincy.
4* Free CBB Betting Pick: Cincinnati -3.5
Bearcats dominate in this one.
NCAAB Free Score Prediction: Cincinnati 78 – Iowa 69
