The Only One: Kentucky
The Kentucky Wildcats have enjoyed three straight SEC Conference Championships, both in the regular seasons and the tournaments. The Wildcats are the perennial champs in the conference known for its football prowess.
John Calipari has just one player on the Preseason All-SEC First Team and one on the Second Team. That’s a little light compared to what Kentucky is used to but that doesn’t mean things can’t be different once the season starts.
Wenyen Gabriel is not one of those two All-SEC selections.

He is the most experienced UK returning player after averaging nearly 18 minutes per game last season and scoring almost five points. He will take a big leap this season as the anything-but-a-freshman leader on this squad.
Closing The Gap: Florida, Texas A&M
For a while, this conference was Florida’s. Then Billy Donovan left and the Gators had to start more or less from the ground up.
But after a successful season that ended with an Elite Eight appearance last year, UF is ready to elevated expectations coming into this one. Their leading scorer from last season, KeVaughn Allen, is back for his junior season. He is an All-SEC Preseason First Team selection.
Florida lost five of its other top six scorers, though. The national media is giving the benefit of the doubt to last season’s SEC Coach of the Year Mike White. They have the Gators eighth in the nation.

A&M also has a guy on the First Team in Robert Williams. Williams might have been a lottery pick if he had one’d and done’d last season. Instead, he’s back to try and raise his stock to a sure-fire top-10 selection once the 2018 NBA Draft comes around.
The Team With The Guy Everybody Wants To See: Missouri
For the first time in a while, Kentucky does not have the top freshman in the SEC. The prized young newcomer will play for the Missouri Tigers this season after defecting from Washington following the Huskies’ coaching change.
Michael Porter Jr. is the top prospect in the class of 2018 and ended up at Missouri after his father signed on with the Tigers as an assistant after his Head Coach, Lorenzo Romar, was fired by the University of Washington.
Porter is one of these do-it-all wings who resembles Ben Simmons with a little more scoring prowess and perhaps not quite the physical tools to rebound and defend as well. He can handle the ball and make plays off the dribble at 6’10” though, which will open things up quite a bit for the rest of Missouri’s players.
It is still Cuonzo Martin’s first season so there could be an adjustment period for Missouri. It is probably more apt to make a deep run in the NCAA tournament five months from now than compete for an SEC Championship much sooner.
