Tuesday, January 5th finds the Utah Jazz playing the Brooklyn Nets for the first time in the 2020-21 campaign.
Last season, the squads played twice with the Jazz capturing both victories. The Jazz holds the all-time record winning 61 of the 92 matches.
Utah Jazz
With a 4-2 record the Jazz seems to be among the elite teams but something still doesn’t feel completely right about this squad to me.
Donovan Mitchell and Rudy Gobert are solid superstars to build the core around and Jordan Clarkson has the potential to be a new era Lou Williams (perennial Sixth Man candidate). Mike Conley is performing at a much improved more Grizzly-like rate this season.
Bojan Bogdanovic took a while to find his scoring touch but the 28 versus the Spurs was a great sign. Yet the more concerning part of the equation is Bojan’s lack of passing ability and poor decision making.
Plus Joe Ingles coming off the bench has never proven to be as successful as having him in the starting lineup for whatever reason.
The offense looks fine for the Jazz (mostly) but the defense other than Gobert and Conley doesn’t resemble the Jazz of recent history. Maybe I’m on an island but this crew doesn’t feel like a top-four Western squad.
Versus the Spurs Mitchell dropped 22, Clarkson added 18, Conley contributed 15, Ingles chipped in 13 and Royce O’Neale had a double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Gobert didn’t reach double-figure scoring but grabbed an impressive 16 boards.
The Jazz is one of the few teams in the association with a healthy roster and as such will have everyone dressed Tuesday.
Brooklyn Nets
After two games every analyst was buzzing about the Nets citing them as the likeliest team to represent the East but since then Brooklyn has lost four of their next five matches.
Making matters more intriguing is the teams they’ve lost to including the Hornets, Grizzlies (with Ja Morant only playing 12 minutes), the Hawks, and up until Sunday the one-win Wizards.
That latter match featured Kevin Durant’s former running mate Russell Westbrook and the game came down to the final shot.
Three Nets delivered double-doubles including KD with 28 points and 11 rebounds, Kyrie Irving with 30 points and 10 assists as well as Jarrett Allen with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
Joe Harris registered 16 points and Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot scored 14 as the other double-figure contributors.
Spencer Dinwiddie was lost for the season with a partial tear to his ACL while Nicolas Claxton is suffering from tendinopathy in his right knee with no definitive timetable for a return date.
