The Wizards will hope to pick up their first win of the season in their home opener while the Raptors hit the road for the first time following a 2-1 start at home.
Washington is looking to return to the playoffs after missing out last season but are faced with a good test of where they stand in that desire facing one of the top teams in the Eastern Conference.
Toronto Raptors
Fresh off a nice big contract, sometimes players get complacent and fail to reach expectations.
At least out of the gate, that doesn’t appear to be the case for DeMar DeRozan.
After signing for a $137.5 million guaranteed this offseason, DeRozan has started hot – averaging 35 points per game through three games.

DeRozan wasn’t able to do enough in the Raptors second game as they fell 94-91 to the defending champion Cavaliers. But, it was certainly a valiant effort against one of the league’s best defensive teams.
[dfads params=’groups=226&limit=1&return_javascript=1′]
DeRozan scored 34 in the preseason finale against the Wizards and could pose matchup issues for them again.
The key for the Raptors will be slowing down Washington point guard John Wall. Wall is at his best when he gets out in transition and will put the Raptors defense to the test.
The Raptors forced Nuggets point guard Emmanuel Mudiay into 6 of 17 shooting after allowing Kyrie Irving to go off on them for 26 points in the game before.
Washington is off to a poor start shooting threes which is a good sign for Toronto who could be exploited by Wall driving and kicking the ball out. Washington is shooting just 24 percent from three in their first two games.
If DeRozan stays hot and the rest of Toronto’s talented group defends, the Raptors will be a tough team to beat – not just in Washington – but the rest of the season.
Washington Wizards
Often forgotten as one of the league’s premier point guards, Wall has started off nicely once again as a playmaker.
He’s averaging 11.5 assists per game through two games. His shooting has struggled early on but his playmaking ability is one of the tops in the league.
However, that ability is limited if the Wizards surrounding group isn’t stepping up.
Bradley Beal and Otto Porter are off to a bad start from behind the arch – combining to go 2 for 15 from 3 point range in the first two games.
The Wizards as a team are also averaging 16.5 turnovers per game thus far.

They have, however, held the lead late in both games they have played so will need to focus on closing their performance if they get ahead in this one.
However, late game mistakes will be costly against Toronto who will be deadly late in the game led by DeRozan and Kyle Lowry.
Washington has a nice group of role players coming off of the bench that should be able to keep them tight when Wall, Beal, and the rest of the starters are off the court.
After holding leads and blowing them late twice already this season, you can bet Washington will be poised to pick up this win and I wouldn’t be surprised to see increased minutes from Wall and Beal late to ensure they hold onto a victory.
NBA Betting Trends:
- Under is 15-10-1 in Toronto’s last 26 games as a road underdog
- DeMar DeRozan is leading the East in scoring per game as of 11/1
- Toronto is last in the NBA in 3 point attempts per game as of 11/1
- Washington is 21st in the NBA in 3 point attempts per game as of 11/1
Free Toronto Raptors vs. Washington Wizards NBA Prediction:
I think Washington’s shooting struggles should continue against a good defense in Toronto. And, Toronto may get off to a slow start in their first road game of the season.
4* Free NBA Betting Pick: Under 208.5
Washington will be focusing on defense after blowing two leads already this season. I like the under in this game.
