Wednesday, October 25, the Toronto Raptors tip off against hosts Golden State Warriors. This is the second of a season long six game Western road trip for the Raptors.
Both teams are expected to be home court seeds come playoff time. Albeit the Warriors are predicted by virtually every oddsmaker to repeat as champions and win their third title in four seasons. The Raptors meanwhile arrive with a more pass friendly, higher three point shooting squad.
Tipoff is at 10:30 p.m. EST.
Last season, the squads played twice with the Warriors winning both contests. The Warriors own the all-time record having won 26 of the teams 41 meetings.
Toronto Raptors
Following a postseason sweep at the hands of the Cavaliers, General Manager Masai Ujiri called for a culture reset. Most presumed that would translate into sweeping roster changes. Instead, the reset appears to be system based.
Specifically, a commitment to increased ball and player movement along with an escalation in three-point shot attempts. The Raptors finished last season ranked 30th in assists and 21st in three pointers made.
To start the season the Raptors rank 13th in assists and 4th in three pointers made.

The past two seasons Toronto’s bench was far and away the East’s best reserve unit. Yet, by the end of the 2017 offseason the reserve unit was decimated. Due to this roster turnover, reserve depth was expected to be the Raptor’s greatest weakness.
Sensing potential issues Coach Casey proactively dispatched the NBA’s seventh youngest brigade to work on chemistry. He’s employing a hockey lineup change with CJ Miles as the lone vet on the unit. To date the strategy is paying massive dividends as the Raptors reserves lead the NBA in plus-minus differential (plus 21.7).

Presumably there will be hiccups as the youthful reserves gain experience. Toronto is betting the move will reap dual benefits. Specifically, having Lowry, DeRozan and Ibaka arrive to the postseason rested and healthy.
Golden State Warriors
After an unimpressive opening week the Golden State Warriors began week 2 with a thumping of the Mavericks 133-103 in Dallas. To finish the week the Warriors host three East squads all with varying playoff objectives.
The Larry O’Brien hardware owners return with their starting unit and core bench contributors intact. Arguably they are stronger having added Nick Young and Omri Casspi.
Oakland’s super team may have begun the campaign slowly, but could easily be sitting at 3-1, but for a miniscule difference in the shot clock. Arguably, getting pumped up for games after three consecutive postseason appearances may be more difficult.
Golden State is cognizant they are the prohibitive favorites and may take a while to round into form. In two wins the Warriors averaged 130.5 points versus 111.0 points in two losses.
That said, there are still concerning signs which if extended could pose problems. Specifically, last season’s second ranked defense currently ranks 24th.
