On paper it almost looks like the wrong team is favored with the Spurs listed at -4 on the road vs. Memphis on Tuesday night. Yes, San Antonio sits higher in the Western Conference standings but the Spurs haven’t looked great lately.
Memphis on the other hand has put the distractions of the trade deadline behind them and are starting to play very solid basketball. The Grizzlies still sit about 8 GB in the race for a Western Conference playoff spot but they want to finish the ‘first half’ strong heading into the all-star break.
San Antonio Spurs
The Spurs are likely still headed to the postseason, but they are definitely limping into the all-star break. San Antonio has dropped four in a row. The string of defeats shouldn’t cause a full blown emergency in the Alamo however. All four games were on the road, and to quality teams in Sacramento, Golden State, Portland, and Utah.

Of course being on the road for a fifth straight game doesn’t do the Spurs any favors on Tuesday. San Antonio is just 10-19 on the road this year. There is a positive note for San Antonio in that tonight’s battle with the Grizzlies is their last before the all-star break. Does that mean the team has already checked out however though?
The Spurs are especially struggling on defense during their current road swing. Overall San Antonio is decent on defense ranking 16th in the league giving up 111.4 points per game. During their recent stretch however the Spurs have allowed 127, 141, 127, and 125 points.

Are oddsmakers looking too much into San Antonio’s recent struggles and their supposed defensive lapse? After all, they’ve been beaten by the 9th, 1st, 10th, and 20th ranked teams in terms of points scored. Memphis does not boast that firepower whatsoever. The Grizzlies are dead last in scoring in the NBA.
Memphis Grizzlies
Can Memphis find some offense on Tuesday? Sure the Spurs defense has been ‘struggling’ but the Grizzlies have only broken 100 points scoring twice in the last nine games. Memphis does counter that poor offense with the #2 scoring defense in the league as they obviously like to get into a down pace game.
Tuesday’s O/U of 209 might actually seem a bit on the high side. The Spurs are 24th in possessions per game and Memphis 29th. 7 of 9 Grizzlies opponents have also been held to 103 points or less. Surprisingly the Spurs are 3rd in field goal percentage and tops in the league from beyond the arc at 40.6%.

This is the fourth matchup of the season between the two teams. Memphis has actually gone 2-1 vs. San Antonio thus far, winning a 96-86 affair in the only meeting at the FedEx Forum on January 9th. Marc Gasol had 26 points and 14 rebounds in that game but he will be sorely missed now as a member of the Raptors.
NBA Betting Trends:
- Spurs are 0-4 ATS their last four road games
- Spurs are 0-7 ATS their last seven games overall
- Spurs are 5-0 ATS their last five playing on 2 days rest
- Grizzlies are 4-0 ATS their last four home games
- Grizzlies are 6-2 ATS their last six overall
Free San Antonio Spurs vs. Memphis Grizzlies NBA Prediction:
The line of Spurs -4 is an interesting one considering San Antonio has dropped four in a row. Memphis has won 3 of 4, but those came against the Knicks, a bad road team in Minnesota, and the Pelicans in a game the Grizzlies were favored.
As long as Gregg Popovich doesn’t rest DeMar DeRozan or Lamarcus Aldridge in the team’s last game prior to the all-star break, the Spurs should come out on top in this one. San Antonio is the more talented team, and they don’t want to go into the break on a complete slump.
