The Portland Trial Blazers are coming of one of their worst losses of the season after giving up 113 points to the new look Chicago Bulls. While the New Orleans Pelicans also came away on the losing end of 89-82 point loss at the hands of the Orlando Magic.
Now both teams look to put all that in the past as they faceoff against each other Friday at the Smoothie King Center.
Portland Trail Blazers
The Portland Trail Blazers just didn’t play the way were accustomed to seeing from them in their last matchup against the Chicago Bulls. Coming out of the gates the team just looked lackadaisical; they gave up 35 points to the Bulls in only the first quarter, while scoring just 14 points themselves.

That put them in a hole early, and they forced themselves to play catch-up for the rest of the game. A lot of that had to do with the fact that Damian Lillard and C.J. McCollum hand trouble finding any rhythm.
The two Portland stars shot a combined 14-39 from the field, and that prevented the team from getting any easy baskets, as those two players are essentially the only playmakers on the Trail Blazers.
They cannot allow that to happen next game. The Pelicans don’t have a great offensive unit, so Portland should have the edge in the scoring department. That means they’ve just got to clamp down defensively to get the win.

New Orleans have shown themselves to be a stagnant offensive unit. They are likely going to go to Anthony Davis and Jrue Holiday on almost every possession, so the Trail Blazers have got to find a way of containing those two.
If they can do just that, they’ll be able to pull out the win, because the team has more scoring than New Orleans.
The Pelicans don’t have a good bench unit, and the team has trouble getting consistent production out of their starting unit as well. So if Portland can clamp down defensively their offense in late game situations will propel them to victory.
New Orleans Pelicans
The New Orleans Pelicans are sitting at 2-10 after coming away with yet another loss, but this time it was at the hands of the Orlando Magic.
To be fair the Pelicans were without star Anthony Davis. But this game was one they could have won, making it frustrating that they came up on the wrong end it.
New Orleans played great defense all night, holding Orlando to only 89 points (shot only 38.6% from the field) in the matchup.
But the Pelicans just couldn’t get themselves baskets as only 3 players scored in double digits, with Terrence Jones leading the way scoring 26 points on the night.
However, besides him the team couldn’t find anyone else to rely on. E’Twaun Moore shot a putrid 6-16 from the field, while staring point guard Tim Frazer went 1-7. That’s just not going to get the team many wins.
They’ve continued to show all season a huge reliance on Anthony Davis. But he can’t do everything. Other players have got to step up on the team.

On the season Davis leads the Pelicans with 30.5 points per game, while E’Twaun Moore sits second averaging 12.6. That in itself just shows how reliant the team is on him to produce at a high level, but they can’t expect to win many games that way.
Hence why they sit at just 2-10 in the Western Conference standings.
The good thing is though; the Pelicans are getting star point guard Jrue Holiday back for next game. That means next match he and Anthony Davis have got to propel this team to victory.
Jrue should have himself a nice game going up against two smaller guards in Damian Lillard and C.J. McCollum.
While Anthony Davis should also continue his trend of putting up 30 points a game, as he’s going up against a weak interior defensive team in the Portland Trail Blazers.
