Philadelphia 76ers
After coming into the series with the 4th best offense in terms of points per game with 115.0, the Sixers were held to a mere 102. Their low scoring was due in large part to their inability to get anything going from 3 point land, as they went 3-25 from downtown, good for 12% shooting on the night.
The 76ers came into this game banged up and boy did it show. Sniper JJ Redick, who was dealing with a back injury, managed just 5 points on 2 for 7 shooting before fouling out late in the contest. Star Center Joel Embiid managed to pour in 22 points, but was 5-15 from the field and was only able to play 24 minutes.

The lone bright spot in the 76ers loss to Brooklyn was mid-season acquisition Jimmy Butler, who poured in 36 points and grabbed 9 rebounds. Butler was active on the defensive end as well, turning the Nets over twice and blocking two shots. Butler isn’t going win this series on his own though, nor should he have to with the kind of offensive firepower Philadelphia possesses.

Ben Simmons wasn’t his usual self in game one, scoring 9 points, grabbing 7 boards, and tallying a mere 3 assists in the contests. While Simmons had a poor game offensively, things weren’t any better for Simmons on the defensive side of the ball either, as he watched D’Angelo Russell beat him to the cup multiple times on his way to a 26 point performance.
With Embiid listed as questionable again, Ben Simmons is going to have to step his game up if Philly wants to avoid heading into Brooklyn down 0-2. They’re going to need Simmons, Harris, and Redick to bounce back in a big way on Monday or Philly will find themselves on the wrong side of the odds when it comes to winning the series.
Brooklyn Nets
Brooklyn just rattled off their biggest win of this 4 game winning streak they find themselves on. Head Coach Kenny Atkinson has to be thrilled with the level of focus he got form his team in game one. Every time Philly started making a run and chipping away at Brooklyn’s lead they always had an answer.
The “next man up” mentality was on full display when starting Center Jarrett Allen picked up his 3rd foul midway through the first quarter. Veteran big man Ed Davis played a big role in this one, grabbing himself a double-double with 12 points on 5-7 shooting from the field and 16 boards. His defense on Embiid was key in this one as well as Embiid struggled from the floor, connecting 5 of his 15 shots in the contest.

Brooklyn’s bench has been solid all season long and they brought their A game in this one, outscoring their counterparts bench 59-26. Caris Levert lead the bench scoring with 23 points in his first ever playoff game. This kid looked like he was ready to break out before going down with a leg injury in early November, and boy would it be huge for Brooklyn if his star is born during these playoffs.
Brooklyn’s guard play had proven to be too much for Philly in game one, as Russell, Levert, and Dinwiddie all scored over 18 points and reigning 3 point contest champ Joe Harris hit a few big 3’s of his own. Although Jimmy Butler had himself a day, scoring 36 points on 11 of 22 from the field, Brooklyn did an excellent job limiting the other 76ers’ guards opportunities, as no other guard had over 10 points.
This Nets team should be as confident as ever after handling Philly rather easily in game one. I think Brooklyn has a very realistic shot at winning this series, and I expect them to keep things close with Philly in game 2.
