Game two of the first round for the Toronto Raptors and Orlando Magic tips off on Tuesday, April 16 at 8:00 PM EST. This season the teams split their four meetings and the Magic took the opening game of the series 104-103.
Orlando Magic
Every road team comes into a series looking to get the split. The Magic accomplished that in game one and now set their sights on taking a commanding 2-0 lead in the series before heading home to Orlando for games 3 and 4 this Friday and Sunday.
In truth, the Raptors did a great defensive job on the majority of the Magic top offensive talents.

Only Fournier (16) scored to his average. While the trio of Vucevic (11 points/3-14), Gordon (10 points/3-10) and Ross (10 points/2-11) were held to a cumulative 31 points (22.8%) on 8 of 35 shooting. That’s 20.9 points off their season average.

Veteran D.J. Augustin became the unlikely hero in the game one Orlando victory leading the Magic with 25 points and scoring a clutch time triple for the game-winner.
Orlando also won steals (9 to 4) and offensive rebounding (10 to 6) which offered additional second chance scoring opportunities.
Toronto Raptors
With a 2-14 game 1 franchise record, of course, the media jumped on the Raptors aren’t a postseason team narrative which is humorous given more than half the team is new.
Kyle Lowry took most of the heat given his scoreless day, but it’s hard to place the entire loss on the All-Star guard’s shoulders. He led the team in assists (8) and was third in rebounding (7). Plus he was a team best +11 (only starter with a positive differential).

This loss came down to blown defensive coverage on Augustin’s triple and a few missed shots. Also, Coach Nick Nurse knows he should’ve created a stoppage to get Leonard re-inserted sooner.
Nurse might also want to take a technical if the whistle doesn’t change for Leonard who got just three free throws in spite of constant physicality on the star. ‘
Of the 16 playoff teams, Toronto was the only team who didn’t have a player get four free throws. In fact, 41 players got to the line four times or more in the eight Game 1’s with stars of Leonard’s ilk getting up to six times as many free throws.
NBA Betting Trends:
- Magic are 6-3-1 ATS in their last 10
- Raptors are 6-4 in last 10 head to head
- The over-under is 3-7 in team’s last 10 head to head matchups
Free Orlando Magic vs. Toronto Raptors NBA Prediction:
Regarding Lowry, he’s never been a player who benefits from rest. Rather, he is at his best when he gets consistent playing time so the rest in the final days of the season likely threw off his shooting rhythm.
A few statistical categories figure to regress to the mean. For example, in season the Magic shot 35.6% from deep and got to the line a league worst 19.2 times. Alternatively, the Raptors shot 36.6% from deep and were a league best 41.5% after the Gasol trade while they got to the line 22 times per game.
Comparing the Game 1 performances Orlando shot 48.3% from deep with 20 free throws while the Raptors shot 33.3% from the perimeter and got to the line just 14 times.
If both teams play closer to their typical nature this will be a tied series heading to Orlando.
4* Free NBA Playoff Betting Pick: Magic plus 10
Expect the Raptors to come out focused, aggressive defensively from the tip and for Nurse to have figured out something to get Lowry rolling early. Orlando has nothing to lose having already garnered the split, but replicating Game 1 won’t be easy.
For as much as I can envision a double-digit Raptors victory until I witness the officials sending Leonard to the line I’m not sure the whistle won’t continue to be a factor, so take the Magic and the points.
