The New Orleans Pelicans are running out of time to salvage their season. Sitting at 12th in the West and three games out of playoff contention New Orleans could find themselves sellers instead of buyers as the trade deadline approaches. Of course an upset win over the Thunder Thursday could jump start the team.
OKC has a huge advantage in this contest not only being at home, but because the Pelicans come in on the second leg of a back-to-back. New Orleans is in Detroit on Wednesday in a tough matchup with the Pistons. The Thunder have momentum too as they come into Thursday on a four game winning streak.
New Orleans Pelicans
If both teams were fresh New Orleans would have a good shot of at least covering Thursday’s spread that is hovering near a dozen points. This includes the Pelicans being without Anthony Davis until mid-February with a finger injury.

Jrue Holiday has been a top notch scorer (20.8 ppg) for the Pelicans all season long. In the first game without Davis Monday Holiday had 21 points, 11 rebounds, and 6 assists as New Orleans topped the Grizzlies by 20. It was a solid win for New Orleans who has dropped 3 of 5 ahead of Wednesday’s game with the Pistons.
The Pelicans will still have a solid inside-out combination even while missing Davis. That’s because Julius Randle has been a force, going for 20+ in four of the last five. Jahlil Okafor stepped up nicely last game with 20 and 10 from the starting C position. When you factor in Nikola Mirotic’s 21 points off the bench last game it suddenly looks like the Pelicans have a versatile scoring attack with some nice depth.

Ultimately it’s going to be playing in the back-to-back that determines how Thursday’s contest is going to go for New Orleans. Davis is the only player on the injury report so the team will at least have a nearly full rotation at their disposal. The Pelicans have dropped their last four playing on 0 days rest.
Another trend working against New Orleans is that they’re 1-4 ATS in the last five in Oklahoma City. It’s a forgone conclusion the Thunder are probably going to win Thursday’s game…but by how much?
Oklahoma City Thunder
Oklahoma City has rattled off three straight wins to climb into 3rd in the Western Conference. Overall OKC is just 5-5 over their last 10 however which gives Pelicans backers at least a bit of optimism. Over the last 10 games the Thunder have dropped contests to the Lakers, Hawks, and Wizards so they’re known to trip up in games they’re supposed to win.
Paul George has dumped in 30+ points in three straight. He should have another big outing Thursday against New Orleans’ fatigued defense that ranks 26th in defensive points/game anyways. Russell Westbrook is obviously going to be a big factor in Thursday’s game too. Can New Orleans keep up with the pace after visiting Detroit the night before?

The Thunder also has the size to bang with the Pelicans down low with Steven Adams at the center position. When you throw in the speedy Dennis Schroder running the back court off the bench this contest could get ugly late as the Pelicans wear down. There’s a reason this spread is OKC -11.5.
NBA Betting Trends:
- Pelicans are 5-2-1 their last 8 overall
- Pelicans are 0-4 ATS their last four on 0 days rest
- Pelicans are 1-3-1 ATS their last five vs. a team with a winning SU record
- Pelicans are 1-4 ATS their last 5 in Oklahoma City
Free New Orleans Pelicans vs. Oklahoma City Thunder NBA Prediction:
The Pelicans have shown some nice versatility in their lineup in the absence of Anthony Davis. New Orleans also has the benefit of scoring a win over OKC 118-114 back in December. That being said Davis had 44 points and 20 rebounds in that game which will be sorely missed.
New Orleans is in a bad way in the B2B. Four Thunder players scored 20+ in the last head to head meeting and they have the depth and the pace to really put the Pelicans away by a lot in this one.
4* Free NBA Betting Pick: Thunder -11.5
As long as OKC doesn’t get complacent in this one they should enjoy a thorough domination of a tired team.
