I thought that the Timberwolves were going to breakthrough and be a contender last season but they were never really close. There is no doubt there is talent in Minny though.
Believing that you need to have “3” bit time player led them to make a deal for Jimmy Butler, a really good player but not exactly a superstar. Was that and other moves enough?
Minnesota Timberwolves Strengths:
Before you get into what Butler adds you have to start with the duo of Karl-Anthony Towns and Andrew Wiggins. Both are All-Star level players at their respective positions.
Wiggins might be the best pure athlete in the NBA and he has improved his scoring every season he has been in the league. His quickness to the hoops is spectacular and he has become a better shooter from range too. There is no reason to think he can’t continue to develop his game to another level. Especially as a contributor on the boards.

Towns, or KAT, has developed into a way more productive player then I would have ever thought. He stuffs the stat sheet every night and is a threat on the perimeter too. Best of all he is efficient. Which he will need to maintain with another mouth to feed.
That mouth would be Butler. The wing can score but he is also one of the better defenders and rebounders at that position. He is reunited withhis old coach and will try and get the rest of the team to pay close attention to the details.
The Timberwolves also added Jeff Teague this season. He is unassuming, which will fit well with this group buthis time in Indiana was pretty unsuccessful so it is hard to know what to expect.
The Wolves also brought in another former Thibodeau disciple in Taj Gibson. Though not a star Ihave always liked his game. He will work for the scraps and be happy about it.
With the additions they have made I do like the depth Minnesota has right now. They are have definitely gotten more experienced but this is not an old team.
They also have the makings of what could be a really effective second unit. Again with players that the coach had in Chicago in Aaron Brooks and Jamal Crawford.

The reserves will not be shy about taking shots, not with the likes of Brooks, Crawford and Shabazz Muahammad. On any given night they could lead the team in points.
Minnesota Timberwolves Weaknesses:
There are definitely going to be some continuity issues with this team. They have three new starters and a number in the reserve pool too. They are just hoping this talent group delivers more.
Now that Thibs has more talent and more of “his guys” there is going to be more pressure to win than there has been in a while in Minnesota. The emotional maekup of the team is going to be tested.
Though I am not a Teague guy I do like the roster makeover. Howeve, they are missing the kind of shooting that would give their stars extra room.
Butler is a good defender but it will be interesting to see if the rest of the team follows his lead. Thibs is a defense guy but the players have to play
Minnesota has much better depth in the backcourt and on the wing than up front. KAT is a star but Gibson has usually com off the bench and nne of their other bigs are starter quality.
This might seem obvious but when the shot are falling this is going to look like a Top 5 team. When they aren’t there are only a couple of players who really know how to diversify their game
Minnesota Timberwolves Betting Prediction: 42-40
With some reshuffling in the West now is the time for Minnesota. Thought I think they will improve over the course of the season it is important for this group to get off to a good start.
The market is definitely high on Minnesota with a total of 46.5 wins. A total they have exceeded only a few times in their history. This team can do it but they also have gusy who are not used to winning…yet.
I think that Minnesota could be a dangerous underdog this season. They have talent but the brand drags down expectations. The time to strike could be early.

It migth sound crazy given the stars they brought in but Minnesota might have more talent overall than division mate Oklahoma City. That is who they will likely be chasing.
A winning season for this group is definitely within their grasp and so is the playoffs. Assuming they start winning the games they are supposed to I like them covering as favourites due to their bench strength.
