(21-17) Los Angeles Lakers vs. Minnesota Timberwolves (17-21)
Los Angeles Lakers
The Lakers went tooth and nail with the Knicks on Friday night at the Staples Center but blew a six-point lead after three quarters and lost, 119–112. That’s now four losses in five games since the Christmas Day massacre of the Warriors.
LeBron James, Rajon Rondo and Kyle Kuzma all missed the game. You could argue those are the Lakers’ three most important guys and there’s chance they’ll all miss this game, too.
James and Rondo certainly will. The Lakers announced LeBron will miss at least another four games. They said Rondo would be out four or five weeks just after Christmas.
Kuzma is the guy who could be back from a strained back that had him questionable for Friday night’s game. There isn’t a whole lot out there now but I imagine he’s using plenty of Icy Hot and trying to get back as soon as possible.
Until then, it’s going to be a lot of Brandon Ingram, Josh Hart, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Lonzo Ball for the Lakers. They did get Michael Beasley back for the first time since Dec. 7 and he played twelve productive minutes. I would suspect those minutes to gradually increase as he gets his legs under him.
JaVale McGee is also a big part of what the Lakers have remaining. He’s back in the starting lineup after a bout with pneumonia. Tyson Chandler is also back and now splitting time off the bench with Ivica Zubac, who is still putting up numbers in limited minutes, though not the kind of stats he was putting up as the starter.
Jeff Teague made his return from a twisted ankle against Orlando and scored twenty-three points in twenty-eight minutes to help Minnesota to a 120–103 home win.
Robert Covington did not play, however; nor did Derrick Rose. The Wolves got bad news regarding Covington, who is going to miss “an extended period of time” with a bone bruise in his ankle. Rose should be back sooner, as he was listed as doubtful for the Magic. It may not be in time for this game, though.
Teague was the big one to get back because it takes some pressure off of Tyus Jones, who was playing forty minutes a night in both Teague and Rose’s absence.
I’m concerned how Minnesota is going to stay afloat without Covington, though. The ship was already going down and now I don’t see a lot of defense out there. There’s some stuff to like about Josh Okogie but he’s playing big minutes now, not out of choice, but more of necessity.

Free Los Angeles Lakers vs. Minnesota Timberwolves NBA Prediction: it goes over.
I don’t see either team playing much defense because I don’t see many defenders on the floor. This one could be headed for the 240s.
