The Houston Rockets have gotten off to a near-ideal start to the 2017-18 season. After kicking off the year with a win over the defending champion Golden State Warriors, their only loss has come on the road to a surprisingly hot Memphis Grizzlies team.
Unfortunately, they’re without Chris Paul for the foreseeable future.
The Charlotte Hornets, on the other hand, have been the epitome of a .500 team, winning their first game big, losing their second game big, winning their third game big, losing their fourth game big.
Houston Rockets
The Rockets have proven they’re talented enough to survive without their offseason acquisition—and one of the greatest point guards of all time—Chris Paul. Having James Harden helps, but getting solid production out of Eric Gordon is what really makes up the difference.

What’s truly surprising about this team is that it’s running just the 19th-fastest pace in the NBA. You can expect that number to rise as the season progresses, but it’s worth noting that the Rockets have slowed it down early in the year without sacrificing wins.
It’s also worth noting that this squad is just 14th in defensive efficiency and 11th in offensive efficiency. Neither of those is elite numbers, yet the leadership of Harden—not to mention the team’s focus on shooting threes, layups and nothing in between—has led to early success.

Against Charlotte, the Rockets would be smart to pick up the pace. The Hornets are currently 14th in the league in pace, but that’s more where you can expect them to stick the whole year, whereas the Rockets should be top five or top seven for a majority of the season.
Houston slowing it down shows the league it’s more versatile than most thought. But kicking it back into gear should shock a team that’s going to be middle-of-the-pack from Game 1 to Game 82.
Charlotte Hornets
The Hornets, as expected, have gotten superb production out of Kemba Walker early in this young season. He’s averaging a team-high 21 points per game, a team-high six assists, is pulling down four rebounds and is shooting 38.1 percent from the three-point line.
Without Nicolas Batum in the lineup to start the year, Charlotte has struggled a bit to find a consistent second option/second playmaker. So far, Jeremy Lamb has been that guy, putting up 15.8 points per night.

Dwight Howard has been pretty much what you would expect out of the man formerly named Superman. He’s still a rebounding machine, pulling down a ridiculous 17.8 per night.
Offensively, while he’s no longer anything close to a No. 1 option, he’s been reliable on just over eight shots per night. His 13.3 points per contest are a bit underwhelming, but his 61.8 percent shooting shows that he’s getting the job done when his number is called.

Free Houston Rockets vs. Charlotte Hornets NBA Prediction:
Although the line isn’t yet set for this one, we have a good idea as to how this will play out. The Rockets should come away with the road victory, but Kemba Walker and Co. will make life difficult for a team without its defensive stalwart in Chris Paul.
4* Free NBA Betting Pick: OVER 211.5
The Hornets should keep this one close, but Harden will be too much for Charlotte when it’s all said and done.
