Wednesday November 1st the Chicago Bulls arrive at the American Airlines Arena to face the Miami Heat. Although the Bulls are projected to be lottery bound, the Heat were expected to capitalize on their early heavy home schedule.
Last season, the Bulls took two of the three matchups over the Heat but are 2-5 in the last seven meetings between the teams. The Bulls hold the edge all-time between the opponents with a 57-49 win margin.
Chicago Bulls
To say the Bulls are a team in flux both on and off the court would be putting too fine a point on how dire the situation is in Chicago. Just five games into their season it seems the best thing the Bulls could hope for is to purposely tank in the final season in which that’s possible.

There are some quality youthful pieces to build a team around with some having yet to reach the court. Zach LaVine who was the key component of the Jimmy Butler trade is still rehabbing from his torn ACL. Bobby Portis (suspended) and Nikola Mirotic (face) both remain out following their MMA throwdown.
Another part of the Butler trade was Lauri Markkanen who has impressed as yet another solid contributor from the 2017 rookie class. He leads the team in rebounds (8.0) and his perimeter shot gives credence to the new era Dirk Nowitzki comparison.

Although there are other intriguing players such as Justin Holiday and Denzel Valentine this iteration of the Bulls is mostly players who are best suited as reserves on quality teams.
A scan across the key stats shows the Bulls rank 30th in 12 separate categories. Of those, the most concerning is fewest points, least assists and rank 30th offensively.
Miami Heat
Entering the season the Heat delivered a missive of how important their first seven games would be, especially since six would occur on home court. As they arrive at that final home court date the need to win is amplified as 17 of their next 24 games are on the road.
Like their opponent, the Heat are suffering from injury woes, particularly the absence of Hassan Whiteside who has played just once this season.
Miami finished last season ranked 5th defensively, but have been missing in action currently ranking 23rd. Clearly, Miami miss Whiteside, but this regression isn’t isolated to his absence.

Rather, the hottest post All-Star team has seemingly lost their mojo. The most glaring problem has been the regression of their perimeter prowess where they rank 27th in efficiency and 20th in makes. In comparison Miami ranked 5th in both categories post All-Star break.
Goran Dragic is doing his best to keep the Heat in games with per game averages of 19.8 points, 4 rebounds, 4.2 assists and shooting 39.1% from deep.
Despite Dragic’s best efforts the four losses could also be a factor of bad luck scheduling.
Specifically, the Heat ran into the sizzling Magic and quality opponents (Spurs/Celtics). But, the overtime loss to the Timberwolves added fuel to concerns. In particular 24 turnovers, (17 in second half/overtime) is not typical of the usually ball protective squad.
