The Chicago Bulls opened up their 2016-17 season on national television with a surprising shooting performance from a group that wasn’t supposed to be anywhere nearing proficient from the three-point line.
As Jimmy Butler put it after the win over the Boston Celtics, “For some guys who can’t shoot, we did pretty well tonight.”
Chicago went on to win its next game by 17 points against the Indiana Pacers, while the Brooklyn Nets have begun 1-2 with a win over those same Pacers and losses to the Boston Celtics and Milwaukee Bucks.
Chicago Bulls
Chicago has begun its season with a surprising amount of efficiency. Jimmy Butler is scoring 20 points per game on 46.2 percent shooting while knocking down 50 percent of his four attempts from downtown.

Dwyane Wade, the current prodigal son of the Windy City, is posting 18 points per game on 44 percent shooting from the field and a ridiculous 66.7 percent from behind the arc on 3.0 three-point attempts per contest.
Rajon Rondo, in traditional fashion, is scoring a mere five points per night while collecting 11.0 assists each contest.
But as important as all of that is, here’s one fact that we’ve clearly buried: Chicago is 2-0 to start the year.

After watching Derrick Rose and Joakim Noah leave the Windy City (under different circumstance), the Bulls officially fall under the category of a new-look roster. That, however, hasn’t stopped them from finding success.
Chicago is in win-now mode despite the notion that they’re not built for the Playoffs.
Don’t expect this team to drop many games this year against teams that are clearly underdogs.
Brooklyn Nets
Brooklyn began its season against the team that is widely considered the No. 2 team in the Eastern Conference.
The Boston Celtics, as good as they were a year ago, managed to grab Al Horford in free agency and find a way to elevate their progress under Brad Stevens this past summer.
A loss to Boston is nothing to be ashamed of. That makes the Nets’ win over Indiana all the more impressive.

Indiana isn’t going to challenge the Cleveland Cavaliers for the Central Division, but it is much improved, courtesy of this past offseason.
But a 103-94 win for Brooklyn against those same Pacers in Game 2 is noteworthy consider the fact that Indy acquired Jeff Teague, Al Jefferson and Thad Young before the year even began (not to mention Myles Turner looks like one of the best young bigs in the game and Paul George is hardly a year removed from a broken leg).
Coming into this game, the Nets are looking for Jeremy Lin to be an efficient shooter and ball-handler. A poor shooting percentage is going to be a problem; a bad turnover-to-assist ratio is going to be a disaster.
Look for the Nets to slow the pace against these Bulls.
Whether that proves to be productive or not is the question.
