The Cavaliers have come out of the gate stone cold despite starting the season with an extremely favorable schedule. That was until Bradley Beal woke the sleeping giant LeBron James who promptly responded to Beal’s suggestion the Wizards were a better team by dropping 57 points in the victory over Washington.
In the process James became the youngest player in NBA history to score 29,000 points. Whereas the Hawks seem content to take advantage of the final season franchises can tank having only beaten the hapless Dallas Mavericks.
Last season, the Hawks took the season series 3-1. The Hawks also hold the edge all-time with a 120-100 win margin
Atlanta Hawks
Perhaps the writing was on the wall when Atlanta chose to let free agent Paul Millsap walk without an offer and followed it up by trading hometown guy Dwight Howard this past offseason.
After a decade of consecutive playoff appearances the Hawks had just one conference finals trip to show for it and has seemingly decided it’s time to rebuild.
At this point it’s hard to imagine who is untouchable on the roster given Dennis Schroder’s preseason off court troubles. Presumably the core will be built around Taurean Prince and John Collins.

The question to this point in the season is what is the Hawks identity? Previous iterations focused on heavy ball movement and defense. But this season Atlanta rank 22nd defensively and 23rd in assists.

Prince is the perfect glue guy utilizing his Swiss army toolset to fill up stat sheets while captaining the defense. Through nine games Prince is averaging 14 points, 5.8 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.3 steals. Rookie Collins is posting a respectable 10.8 points and 7.8 rebounds in 20.3 minutes.
Cleveland Cavaliers
The odd beginning to the regular season has been punctuated by the Cavaliers poor start. In truth there were signs of potential trouble given the circumstances.
To wit, the loss of a key offensive contributor in Kyrie Irving left a rather large gap. Cleveland’s system has dominated based on James ball distribution prowess and surrounding the King by three point sharp shooters.
The problem entering the season was the additions of Derrick Rose and Dwyane Wade weren’t logical replacements given their mediocre perimeter efficiency.
To compensate the Cavaliers moved Kevin Love into the starting center role and sent Tristan Thompson to the bench. Consequently Ty Lue tweaked the lineup using several different iterations, eventually reinserting Thompson. Subsequently Thompson suffered a calf injury and will miss at least the next month.

Cleveland enters the contest with the worst defensive rank in the Association, but boasts the 7th best offense. James is carrying the load while the team awaits the return of injured point guard Isaiah Thomas.
James’ stat line has MVP potential with 29.1 points, 7.7 rebounds, 8.7 assists, 1.3 steals and 1.2 blocks. At issue, James is logging 37.6 minutes per game particularly versus subpar competition.
