The Cardinals continue to hum along at an impressive clip. They have 19 more wins than Washington heading in.

Meanwhile the Nats haven’t totally blown up, but it doesn’t look good.
Washington Nationals
The Nats have won 6 of 10 after last night’s loss to the Cardinals in the series opener. At this point their disappointment is well documented. If they wanted to get back in either the division or Wild Card race they would have to go on a heck of a run.
Health has not been a friend to this club for most of the year which is why even though Bryce Harper has finally exploded the lineup has been mediocre. Denard Span has been shutdown for the season and Strasburg is having his usual flareups.
Joe Ross was not supposed to make 11 starts this season…the fact that he has says a lot.

Fortunately for Washington he has been solid filling in for a number of starters with an ERA of 3.24 and good peripherals.
He has been especially sharp in his last two outings, giving up just 1ER over his last 13 innings. Both against losing clubs.
Ross is two different pitchers depending on where he starts. At home his ERA is under 2 while on the road it is close to 5. I am actually surprised that he is not more of an underdog in this one.
St. Louis Cardinals
After rare back to back losses against the Padres last month the Cardinals have ripped off eight wins in 9 games and will be 40 games over .500 if they win this one.
The Pirates are doing their best to keep pace and wit six more against the Bucs they have to continue to play well to maintain their healthy division lead.
Though they are still missing some key bats the offense has come alive, scoring 4 or more runs in eight of the last 10. Still backed by the top ERA in the Majors. A stingy 2.65
It says a lot about this team that they can still be solid favourites with call up Marco Gonzales making his first start of the season.
He made 5 starts for the Cards last season and was decent but he was terrible in the Minors this season. He got hit hard with a 5.20 ERA in AAA. Not exactly the kind of guy you expect to pitch for the best team in baseball this time of year.
I don’t argue with the call up and the Cards can definitely afford to “throw” a game away if they are trying to rest some guys for later in the year.

It’s just amazing that oddsmakers are still pretty firm that the team should win anyway. It is tough to disagree with them too.

4* MLB Betting Prediction: St. Louis ML
I wouldn’t make this my play of the day but back STL is still a pretty good idea.
MLB Baseball Score Prediction: St. Louis 5 – Washington 4
Similarly, fading the Nats has been a winning strategy.
