The Nationals and the Cardinals faceoff in what could be a NL Playoff showdown matchup, as both perennial contenders appear to be on track early for the October classic.
The game features some of the game’s brightest stars in Washington, with Bryce Harper and Max Scherzer facing the Cards organization that seems to always find good MLBers later in the drafts, such as Matt Carpenter and Jamie Garcia.
St. Louis Cardinals
The Cards offense seems to always get the job done while having very few big name superstars.
Matt Holiday is not the same player he once was, so the player who has taken over as their star would be Matt Carpenter, is a solid player who leads the team in HR with 9.

Stephen Piscotty and Randal Grichuk are promising young players, as is Aledmys Diaz who has arguably been their best hitter so far this season as a call-up.
Diaz on the year sports a .336 average with 6 homers and 24 RBI, while filling in regularly at SS while Jhonny Peralta is on the DL.
Jaime Garcia is one of the most underrated starters in the league, which is mostly due to his injury history.
While he has only started 30+ games once in the past six seasons, he’s put up strong numbers when healthy.
For his career, which spans back to 2008, Garcia has compiled a 3.32 ERA and a 1.26 WHIP. He appears to be right on track as his usual self this year entering the contest in DC, carrying a 3.59 ERA and 1.20 WHIP along with 51 K on the season, which lead the team.
The Cards probably hope he can go deep into the game, as closer Trevor Rosenthal has put up some of his worst stats so far this year.
Washington Nationals
The Nationals boast some of the game’s best young players with the likes of Bryce Harper, Stephen Strasburg and Anthony Rendon.
Their lineup throughout is solid, with catcher Wilson Ramos putting up his best season so far after undergoing laser eye surgery in the offseason.
He’s commented that he can finally see the ball out of the pitchers’ hands now, and it appear he isn’t lying as his .333 batting average is second on the team.
Daniel Murphy, another underrated player that was a great offseason signing, has built on his great playoff last season with the Mets and leads the Nationals this season in batting average (.394) and hits (69).
Max Scherzer entered this season as a consensus top-5 starting pitcher in the entire MLB. While his ERA sits at 3.80, he has been his strong self in K/9 with 11.4 and 84 K total on the year as opposed to just 18 walks.

He also racked up an amazing 20 strikeout game three starts ago against his former team, the Detroit Tigers.
The performance ranks ties for the top single game total ever in a 9 inning start, slotting him alongside names such as Roger Clemens, Randy Johnson, Kerry Wood and others.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The Cardinals are 5-5 in their past 10 games
- St. Louis is 13-14 on the road
- St. Louis is hitting .267 on the year
- Scherzer hasn’t allowed more than 2 earned runs in any of his last 3 starts
- Bryce Harper has just 2 HR in his past 23 games
- The Nats are 13-8 at home
Free St. Louis Cardinals vs. Washington Nationals MLB Prediction:
While the St. Louis and Washington both have strong offenses, I like the pitching matchup in this game to keep the runs in check.
The biggest name slugger in the game, the aforementioned Harper, has been on a cold run lately and as a left handed hitter faces a tough task in facing tough LHP Garcia.
Scherzer appears to be in top form in his past three starts, where he’s racked up 38 K and only 3 walks and is chucking in his home park where he’s 2-0 with 9 earned runs in 21 innings.
