WHERE DO TEAMS STAND IN MLB?
After some MLB Power Rankings? Two more weeks have passed in Major League Baseball – there has been some shakeup in the dirty dozen for sure. While the Cubs still look like the class of MLB, a new contender has emerged in the form of the Boston Red Sox.
While the Sox are peaking, there are some teams that are in the midst of a serious slide – I’m talking to you Toronto Blue Jays! It’s as fluid as ever in the world of baseball.
Version 9.0 – 2016 MLB Power Rankings
Let’s break it down in the September 19 edition of Dave B’s MLB Power Rankings.
1. Chicago Cubs (94-55)
Two Weeks Ago: 1
Is there any doubt about it? The Cubs have already clinched their Division and it won’t be long before they clinch the top seed in the NL. There is zero weakness on this team – they have an incredible +200 run differential so far, their pitching is absolutely top shelf and their offense boasts two legitimate MVP candidates. Chicago is head-and-shoulders above the rest folks – like it or not!
2. Boston Red Sox (84-64)
Two Weeks Ago: 7
The Red Sox look like a team of destiny right now – don’t they? They have gone 7-3 in their last 10 games and enter the week on a four game win streak – including a sweep of the Yankees over the weekend.
We all know about the crazy offense but how about a bullpen that has a 1.06 ERA this month? The Sox look like the best team in the AL right now and are a surprising #2 this week.
3. Washington Nationals (88-61)
Two Weeks Ago: 3
The Nationals have gone 6-4 in their last 10 games overall although they enter the week on a two game losing streak. Steven Strasburg is on the shelf again but this team just keeps finding ways to win!
Washington has arguably the deepest starting rotation in the Bigs, a solid offense and some guy named Bryce Harper. Their success in the postseason however relies on Strasburg who is a little scary at the moment.
4. Texas Rangers (88-62)
Two Weeks Ago: 2
The Rangers still own the best record in the AL despite a 5-5 stretch over their last 10 games. The puzzling thing is the fact that they have just a +8 run differential this year despite being 24 games over .500.

They have nine – count ‘em nine come-from-behind ninth inning wins on the year and they have a knack of beating up on their Division opponents – signs of a good team.
5. Cleveland Indians (86-63)
Two Weeks Ago: 4
The Indians lost Carlos Carrasco for the year after breaking his pitching hand over the weekend – not good but they still hold a seven game lead in their Division.
The Indians still have Corey Kluber and Trevor Bauer in the rotation and their pen has surrendered a league-low ERA since the All-Star break. The injury could eventually have big implications but for now it’s not enough to move the Tribe out of the top 5.
6. Los Angeles Dodgers (84-65)
Two Weeks Ago: 6
The Dodgers have gone just 5-5 in their last 10 games – therefore they don’t rise or fall in the Rankings. This is still one of the most balanced teams in the NL and an easy #6.
7. Baltimore Orioles (82-67)
Two Weeks Ago: 10
The Orioles have gone 6-4 in their last 10 games and own the top Wild Card spot in the AL. They climb mostly because the teams around them have faltered recently.
That said mark Trumbo has not slowed in the least, the bullpen has been very good and the rotation has done just enough lately to keep the team afloat.
8. Toronto Blue Jays (81-68)
Two Weeks Ago: 5
The Jays have been on a major slide as of late – they haven’t won a series in a month and have had their problems with some pretty bad teams as of late.
The offense has dried up and the team just can’t find any situational hitting right now. It’s a good thing that the pitching has remained solid but if the offense doesn’t wake up, an almost guaranteed postseason spot may slip through their hands!
9. Seattle Mariners (79-70)
Two Weeks Ago: 16
There is not hotter team in the Bigs right now than the Mariners who play the Jays this week.
They are 8-2 in their last 10 games. Pitching and offense are working in perfect unison for the Mariners right now – they are dangerous indeed as we head into the stretch.
10. New York Mets (80-69)
Two Weeks Ago: 14
The Mets have gone 7-3 in their last 10 games and enter this week on a nice three game win streak. Jacob DeGrom won’t return to the team this year unfortunately but Steven Matz is on the cusp of a return to the rotation.
New York has the players and the experience to make things interesting for sure. They currently own the top Wild Card spot and are back in the top 10 because of it.
11. St. Louis Cardinals (78-71)
Two Weeks Ago: 8
The Cards are 5-5 in their last 10 games overall and are starting to get healthy at just the right time. If there is one thing we’ve all learned is that the Cards, no matter what is thrown their way, they will be a factor.

Seung Hwan Oh has been terrific out of the bullpen, the offense has overachieved and the Cards organizational prowess has been on display yet again!
12. San Francisco Giants (79-70)
Two Weeks Ago: 12
The Giants, despite a poor second half still sit in a Wild Card position in the NL. They have gone 5-5 in their last 10 games and have shown signs recently of snapping out of their funk.
The Giants set the NL on fire earlier this year and are still a dirty dozen team to me – they SHOULD get that final Wild Card spot!

- 18. Colorado Rockies (72-77) Two Weeks Ago: 18
- 19. Kansas City Royals (76-73) Two Weeks Ago: 13
- 20. Chicago White Sox (72-77) Two Weeks Ago: 19

- 28. San Diego Padres (62-87) Two Weeks Ago: 28
- 29. Atlanta Braves (58-91) Two Weeks Ago: 29
- 30. Minnesota Twins (55-95) Two Weeks Ago: 30
