Milwaukee Brewers
Brandon Woodruff was still a prospect at this time last season. He was a fifth round pick as a high schooler way back in 2011 but decided to stay at home and pitch for Mississippi State. That experience didn’t win him much, as he went in the eleventh round three years later.
Of course, when he finally broke onto the scene a year ago, Woodruff started games, finished games, and pitched the middle innings out of the bullpen. On May 11, however, he had an 8.11 ERA. By the season’s end, it was 3.61.

He was at his best in the postseason, when he opened a game and came on as a reliever after just one batter. In that latter game, he became the only left-handed hitting pitcher to homer off of a lefty (Clayton Kershaw) in the playoffs.
He’s made eight starts this season in a more traditional role. The strikeouts are up, over 11.5 per nine innings, and the walks are down, 2.6 per nine. His home run rate has always been strong and he’s giving up less than one per nine this season. The record (5–1) is certainly better than the ERA (4.25).
Philadelphia Phillies
The Phillies took down the Brewers on Monday, 7–4. Aaron Nola labored through three innings, giving up three runs and throwing nearly ninety pitches.
Freddy Peralta wasn’t good for the Crew, either. He only went four and gave up seven hits. Once he left the game, Cesar Hernandez homered in the fifth, his fourth and a two-run shot.

One guy who didn’t do much damage was Bryce Harper. He went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts. The Big Kid has just one home run since April 26 and three since April 9. In fact, he doesn’t even have an extra-base hit since that last homer, a drought that has lasted seventeen at-bats. He’s now just barely better than league-average, in terms of OPS.

I believe in that Woodruff power arm and Jared Eickhoff has been terrific since he returned. I’m definitely on the under.
