Mexico
Mexico gave the sort of effort we were banking on yesterday but Miguel Gonzalez let me down and Joakim Soria wasn’t able to pitch around a big error that led to three unearned runs that put the game away in the ninth.
The home country in Pool D isn’t mathematically eliminated. If Puerto Rico takes care of Italy, Mexico can still force a tie with Italy and Venezuela with a win. It will likely have to shut out Venezuela or hold it to no more than a run or two to give itself a shot with the tie-breaker.

But Mexico doesn’t have nearly the Major League talent that Venezuela has; and the talent it does have isn’t producing. Adrian Gonzalez has gone hitless from the cleanup spot the two starting pitchers Gallardo and Gonzalez were both hit hard.
Venezuela
It isn’t as clear-cut as a win to get in, because three teams could still finish 2-1 in Pool D. Venezuela would be in a little bit of trouble in a tie-break situation because of its 11-0 loss to Puerto Rico.
Of course, that will be sorted before this game begins. Italy plays Puerto Rico this afternoon and the Venezuelans will know exactly where they stand when their game begins.

Yusmiero Petit started one game and made about 30 appearances out of the Nationals’ bullpen last season and once upon a time he was a very effective guy at the end of some San Francisco Giants rotations. He’ll get the start tonight.
Petit has always been heavy on his fastball use. It doesn’t have the live action it once had, but it’s better than most of the Mexicans are accustomed to. He’ll probably be fair, not dominant but also a safe play to get through a few innings.
Free Mexico vs. Venezuela WBC Prediction: Venezuela probably gets it done.
That’s not saying much considering it’s a -200 favorite. I’m pretty lukewarm on the whole Sunday card and this game is no exception to that feeling.
4* Free WBC Betting Pick: Over 10.5 (-110)
If I’m going to play anything in this one, it’s the over. Like all the games in Pools C and D today, both teams are into their pitching depth. Venezuela’s offense looks awake after the win over Italy. Just be careful.
