Colorado Rockies
The Rockies finally broke through into the Divisional Series for the first time since 2009. Tony Wolters came off the bench and delivered the game-winning single in the 13th inning at Wrigley Field on Tuesday night in the Rockies’ 2–1 wild card win.
Colorado now faces Milwaukee after having burned its two aces, German Marquez and Kyle Freeland, in game 163 and last night’s wild card just to get to this point.

That immediately puts Colorado at a disadvantage because it will have to start a lesser arm, likely either Jon Gray or Antonio Senzatela in Game 1 on the road.
Senzatela is the likely selection. He had the better overall season, the stronger finish, and Jon Gray really struggles away from home. I would be surprised if Bud Black doesn’t tab his young, right-handed Venezuelan.
The potential advantage Colorado has, however, is that its top pitchers will be throwing later in the series, either beginning in Game 2 or 3.
The Rockies are plenty warm after high-stakes games on Monday and Tuesday and if they catch the Brewers flat-footed in this game, they will have both the home-field and starting pitching advantage when the series shifts to the Rocky Mountains.
Milwaukee Brewers
That makes these first two games especially critical for Milwaukee and the Brewers may even feel some pressure to win the first two at home, even as favorites.
Craig Counsell hasn’t named a starter for this game, either, but I have to assume it will be Gio Gonzalez after Jhoulys Chacin started Monday’s game against the Cubs that determined Milwaukee was the NL Central Division champion.

The Brewers’ front office brought Gonzalez over in a post-deadline deal with the Nationals to be an ace in the playoffs and he looked as much in his five starts with Milwaukee, going 3–0 with six earned runs allowed in over twenty-five innings.
Gonzalez is more of a five-inning guy at this stage in his career, though, and he’s lucky to be backed up by one of the Major League’s best bullpens that re-discovered its swagger just in time.
Josh Hader threw two nasty innings to say bye-bye to the Cubbies on Monday and Corey Knebel flashed his gas before that. Joakim Soria and Jeremy Jeffress complete a four-headed monster from the right side.
More help could be on the way in the form of someone like, say, Freddie Peralta, who can throw smoke but probably won’t get a chance to start a postseason game at this stage in his young career. He could help bolster the ‘pen, though.
That bullpen and the home field mixed with Colorado’s pitching fatigue makes Milwaukee the strong favorite for good reason but these first two games are huge, something just less than must-wins for the series favorite, which feels unusual but true, nonetheless.

Free Colorado Rockies vs Milwaukee Brewers MLB Prediction: Colorado steals one.
This is a gut feeling. The Rockies have the right-handed power to give Gonzalez problems, if he is indeed the starter (if he isn’t, it’ll likely be Wade Miley anyway). Senzatela finished his season quite well and I think there’s something to be said about the wild card winner coming into Game 1 hot.
I can see Milwaukee’s crowd getting a little anxious if things don’t break well early.
Plus, we’re going to get a great price with Colorado, when the odds open.
