Mets 2018 Season Preview
Ready to check out our 2018 New York Mets predictions? Injuries tore this team down last season as their greatest strength seemed to disappear over night. Better healthy will help but is it enough to get the Mets back to competing with NL East favorite Washington? Possibly?
MLB Mets Predictions & Handicapping Insight
You have to give props to the Mets for trying to upgrade the team the old fashioned way. They are trying to maximize their window before they have to start paying their pitchers big time.
Health will be the key to the rotation but on offense they are looking to some veteran bats to provide some serious thunder. If they do this will be a big slugging team.
2018 MLB Team Previews – New York Mets
- National League East +400
- National League +1200
- World Series +2800
Key Additions:
- Todd Frazier
- Jay Bruce
- Adrian Gonzalez
- Jason Vargas
Bruce returns to Queens to add some power in the outfield. He and Frazier should make it more difficult for teams to nibble around Yoenis Cespedes in the middle of the lineup.
The writing was on the wall in L.A. for Gonzalez once Cody Bellinger became a big thing. He might have some good years left though. We will see.

Vargas is a steady starter coming off a really big year. They need steadiness more than stardom from him this season.
Key Losses:
- No significant losses.
The Mets do expect to have a couple of very familiar names starting the season on the disabled list in 3B David Wright & OF Michael Comforto.
Mets Predictions: Projected Lineup:
- 2B Asdrubal Cabrera
- 3B Todd Frazier
- LF Yoenis Cespedes
- RF Jay Bruce
- C Travis d’Arnaud
- 1B Adrian Gonzalez
- CF Juan Ligares
- SS Ahmed Rosario
When you look at this lineup you see the potential for a lot of homers. At least four have had season of 30 or more in their past and in some cases a lot more than that. The potential is there.

What you also see is that there is no one bat that is truly in their prime. These are mostly guys who can carry a team when they are hot but might not be the consistent threat day to day.
There might be some big time lulls and a lot of strikeouts.
Mets Predictions: Projected Rotation:
- RH Jacob deGrom
- RH Noah Syndergaard
- LJ Jason Vargas
- RH Matt Harvey
- LH Steven Matz
On potential this staff is as good as any in the league but health has been a factor. Key will be how Syndergaard holds up. He has shown his ceiling is high but also that he is brittle.
Matz and Harvey tease you but if they can’t pitch at least 160 or so inning than what’s the point. I know I haven’t talked about top starter deGrom. He is good and dependable. Which is the reason the went out ad got Vargas. At least the second part.
Mets Predictions: Projected Closer:
- RH Jeurys Familia
Familia has had some success in the role but I am not he has it totally locked down coming into the 2018 season.
AJ Ramos is another possibility. He has done the jobs in the past and in terms of stuff is probably about even with Familia.
Zach Wheeler was supposed to be a part of the rotation way back when. Now it is not clear what his role will be but he will be in the pen to start the season.
2018 New York Mets Prediction:
Unfortunately there are not any sportsbooks that offer second place wagers because that seems like a given in this spot. New York will slot in behind Washington in the NL East.
There is a chance that a healthy staff and a power surge also gives them the ability to get a Wild Card but it will be very competitive.
I see this as primarily a .500 club. If they can get one good run at some point that will make all the difference. Health will be critical.

In looking at different situations for the Mets I see this team as being one to look to the under on. They have good pitching and their offense is going to be sporadic.
Yes there will be some nights when the bats are booming but there are also going to be a lot of nights where there core is 0 for 3 with three strikeouts too.
