Mets 2017 Season Preview
Ready to check out our 2017 New York Mets predictions? The Mets have to make piece with the situation surrounding David Wright but really the key factor in their performance is a pitching rotation that could be the best in the league this season and for years to come.
MLB Mets Predictions & Handicapping Insight
The Mets have made the playoffs in back to back years for the first time since 1999-2000. Most pundits have another return to the postseason with them as the primary challenger to Washington in the East.
The hitting is always a little suspect but the greater concern has to be the pitching. No group has more potential but injuries have attacked this promising group the last couple of season. If they bite again
2017 MLB Team Previews – New York Mets
- National League East +188
- National League 6/1
- World Series 12/1
Key Additions:
- No significant additions
Despite losing in the World Series two years ago and then not making it as far last season the Mets did not add to their team in the offseason. They are hoping that health will be the key this season.
One player they are counting on that was not in the mix is starter Zach Wheeler. A foundational piece before getting hurt they need him this season.

Key Losses:
- SP Bartolo Colon
- 1B James Loney
I know Colon is often the but of jokes but he led the Mets in wins last season with 15 and has been a big factor over the last couple of season for his reliability.
Loney is nothing special but he has always fielded his position well and hits for a decent average. Most importantly he is not a strikeout machine. Both losses are very recoverable.
Cubs Predictions: Projected Lineup:
- 3B Jose Reyes
- RF Curtis Granderson
- SS Asdrubal Cabrera
- LF Yoenis Cespedes
- 1B Lucas Duda
- 2B Neil Walker
- CF Michael Conforto
- C Travi d’Arnaud
This lineup should be able to make some balls leave the yard but beyond that it is difficult to project. Jose Reyes was a spark when he first came back to New York but his overall numbers were just OK.
An interesting absence from the lineup is Jay Bruce. The slugger was acquired from Cincinnati and was a complete bust. If they are able to get him right though I am not sure where they would play him.
Granderson hit 30 homers last year in case you didn’t know.
Mets Predictions: Projected Rotation:
- RH Noah Syndergaard
- LH Jacob deGrom
- RH Matt Harvey
- LH Steven Matz
- RH Zach Wheeler
Syndergaard may already be the best pitcher in baseball…and if he isn’t it is only because he is just getting started. Having him at the top takes pressure away from Harvey and deGrom who can both be brilliant but were brittle last year.
The depth they have with Matz and Wheeler is why this rotation is highly thought of.
Wheeler is still a question mark until the real games start but if he is as good as he was before he got hurt than the Mets are going to be throwing 5 guys out there who would be 1s and 2s almost anywhere else.
Mets Predictions: Projected Closer:
- RH Hector Rondon
Jeurys Familia had a strong regular season with 51 saves. He can be dominant but in a place like New York. if you are not perfect people are always peeking around the corner.

Addison Reed was brilliant in a setup role and has closer experience. He fits in well on this team as a high strikeout guy who helps shorten the game.
Hansel Robles may not look like much but he has a very live arm and can put guys away. He needs to cut down on his walks more to be a guy they go to more in high leverage situations.
2017 New York Mets Prediction:
The ceiling of this team will be determined by the pitching staff. The starters have all had past success to varying degrees and if they are all healthy there is no reason they can’t win the NL East.
Even if the majority of them are pitching well this team should be very good provided the bats continue to produce. The lineup is definitely going to be boom or bust but the pitching will help them out.
One thing that would definitely help out the pitching is better defense. Other than Cespedes in left field there is not a plus defender on the roster. It is a good thing they strike a lot of batters out.

This team has a wide range for me. At the top they could be a 95 win team but if injuries and age catchup they could be sub .500 too. The key will be to follow some streaks.
There are likely not going to be a lot of overs with this group so don’t get pulled in when you see a lot of 6s and 6.5s. Have discipline.
