I do know that with the likes of Giancarlo Stanton and Aaron Judge involved we are likely to see some monster shots.
Before I get into any handicapping of the Derby I think it is important to remember that this is just a way to pass the time between meaningful action.
Like the All-Star Game itself you do not want to go too heavy on this glorified batting practice session.
Last note before we break it down is that Derby is broken down into four brackets with winners advancing. Here is how I see it breaking down.
One of the amazing things about this competition is how many participants are so early in their careers this season. Judge, Bour, Bellinger, and Sano, none of them even have three full seasons in the Majors.
I am not saying that experience is a major factor but being able to take it all in could be a difference maker at some point.
To narrow my focus in looking at the Derby I am first eliminating a couple of participants. The first of those is Charlie Blackmon.
I love his game but I never see him as a slugger, the type that will just be able to muscle the ball out of the park on swings he doesn’t totally barrel up.

Further, Coors Field is a definite factor in his home run numbers throughout his career.
His numbers at Marlins Park are nothing special. The second guy I am eliminating is Mike Moustakos. He is enjoying a career season but his whole career has been plagued with inconsistency.
I know this is just an exhibition but still I don’t trust him.
Those assumptions advance Bellinger & Sano and in the other matchups I am going to take the hometown heroes Stanton and Bour over the Yankees’ Judge and Sanchez. I know Judge is all everything this season but something has got to give here.
That makes the second round look like this:
Stanton vs. Sano and Bellinger vs. Bour. No I do not think it is a coincidence that Stanton and Bour are on opposite sides of the bracket.
In Bour vs. Bellinger the choice is easy…Bour. Bellinger may be getting a lot of hype and deservedly so but lately he has cooled – no homers since June 25th (as this is being written).
He has got a very nice stroke but winning these things often requires a bit of brute strength too. Against a home favourite that might be too much to overcome.
Bour is an absolute monster and should feel completely at ease in the environment. Especially with Stanton still in it to shield from some pressure.
Moving to Sano vs. Stanton this is surely a battle between a couple of prodigous power hitters. Obviously Stanton will be the crowd favourite but I do think that Sano can match him.
He has an easy power about him and might benefit from not having the crowd hanging on every swing.
Now I see a final match between Bour and Sano. Both have good odds payoffs and even though he will have to have beaten Marlins in back to back rounds I think Sano is the play.

Sure he will be in enemy territory but I like that he hits a lot of his homers on the road and should be in a nice groove by the the time the final round takes place.
So there you have it…a super scientific breakdown of the 2017 Home Run Derby
