2017 MLB Team Previews – Kansas City Royals
- American League Central +675
- American League +1600
- World Series +3300
Key Additions:
- OF/1B Brandon Moss
- SP Jason Hammel
- RP Travis Wood
- OF Jorge Soler
The Royals offseason acquisitions is a rather impressive list that really hasn’t been talked about at all.
Not only did they get much more talent added from the pitching aspect, OF Jorge Soler figures to have a bright future ahead of him. There just simply wasn’t a place for him on the Cubs, but the he adds some power and depth to the Royals OF core.
Key Losses:
- SP Edinson Volquez (free agent to Marlins)
- DH Kendrys Morales (free agent to Blue Jays)
- SP Kris Medlen (free agent to Braves)
- RP Wade Davis (traded to Cubs)
- OF Jarrod Dyson (traded to Mariners)
- RP Greg Holland (free agent to Rockies)
That is a frightening list to lose.
Kansas City simply couldn’t keep the key pieces around and then decided to wheel and deal for some depth by trading away the speedy Jarrod Dyson and back end of the bullpen star Greg Holland.
There’s a lot of gaps to fill on this Royals team and they’ll certainly need a lot of different players to step up this season.
Royals Predictions: Projected Lineup:
- Alcides Escobar
- Mike Moustakas
- Lorenzo Cain
- Mike Moustakas
- Salvador Perez
- Alex Gordon
- Jorge Soler
- Brandon Moss
- Whit Merrifield
There is one thing to watch in this Royals lineup.
Salvador Perez was injured in the World Baseball Classic and is expected to resume action at Spring Training on the 22nd.

Kansas needs his bat in the lineup and if he is unable to go by Opening Day, there is going to be a huge gap missing in this lineup.
Royals Predictions: Projected Rotation:
- Danny Duffy
- Ian Kennedy
- Jason Hammel
- Nate Karns
- Jason Vargas
The Royals rotation has a lot of potential.
Danny Duffy has emerged as one of the top pitchers in the MLB and Kansas City finally has some depth to the rest of the rotation.
They’ll need the 3-5 spots to really step up, along with stay healthy as their isn’t many other options.
Royals Predictions: Projected Closer:
- Kelvin Herrera
Herrera will step into a much bigger role this year.
After being the set up man last year, he will grab the spot of Wade Davis, who was traded in the offseason.
2017 Kansas City Royals Prediction:
The Royals are an interesting team to watch for this season.

While they did lose a lot of key pieces, both offensively and on the pitching staff, they did add some players to replace the gaps.
As stated early, keep an eye on Salvador Perez and his health. The Royals simply need him to be 100% healthy. If they can get off to a hot start, this is one team that can catch some momentum.
