Typically, after a poor season, the Miami Marlins ownership blow things up and start from scratch. But, surprisingly enough, the Marlins decided to stay the course and add in a couple of pieces that might end up making a difference this season.

- Wei-Yin Chen

The Marlins didn’t have a busy off-season, but it was a quality off-season.

They didn’t lose anybody of significance and they signed Wei-Yin Chen to bolster the top of their rotation and they got manager Don Mattingly to lead this team.
Marlins Predictions – Projected Lineup:
- 2B Dee Gordon
- LF Christian Yelich
- RF Giancarlo Stanton
- 1B Justin Bour
- CF Marcell Ozuna
- 3B Martin Prado
- C J.T. Realmuto
- SS Adeiny Hechavarria
This is a really solid lineup that could sneak up on some people. Dee Gordon, Christian Yelich and Giancarlo Stanton is a fantastic top of the order in a lineup.
You really couldn’t ask for a better table setter than Gordon who can get on base at a high clip and steal a ton of bases. Yelich is going to breakout if he and Stanton stay healthy for the entire season.
Yelich has the potential to be a .300 25-25 ballplayer. And everyone knows about Giancarlo Stanton’s talent. He just needs to stay healthy; if he does, he’s an MVP candidate.
The rest of the lineup is solid. Justin Bour is a big left handed power hitter and Martin Prado is a quality, veteran hitter.
Marlins Predictions – Projected Rotation:
- RH Jose Fernandez
- LH Wei-Yin Chen
- RH Tom Koehler
- RH David Phelps
- RH Jarred Cosart
Signing Wei-Yin Chen was a huge and much needed boost for the Miami Marlins. Chen gives the Marlins and nice 1-2 punch in the rotation now which drops Tom Koehler into the third slot which is a good fit for him.

This isn’t a great rotation, but it’s not bad so long as Jose Fernandez stays healthy and makes 33 starts at the top of the rotation.
Marlins Predictions – Projected Closer:
- A.J. Ramos
The Marlins have a pretty good bullpen. A.J. Ramos is a quality closer who had over 30 saves last year, had a 2.30 ERA and had an 85% LOB percentage.
Mike Dunn, Bryan Morris, and Carter Capps are quality, reliable, pitchers coming out of the bullpen. Those three pitchers bring the heat and provide a bridge to Ramos closing things down in the ninth.
2016 Miami Marlins Predictions:
I like the Marlins and believe they are a sleeper team to watch this season. You can get the Marlins at 12/1 to win the NL East which is fantastic value.
We saw what happened last year when the Washington Nationals were the best team on paper and were supposed to run away with the division. They didn’t win the division and were upset by the New York Mets.
Now, the Mets are the sexy pick as they are the defending NL Champions and the Washington Nationals still have a lot of talent on paper. Nobody is talking about the Miami Marlins and I believe that is a mistake.
The Marlins have a really quality team from top to bottom and for as much flak Don Mattingly gets all he has done is win year in and year out. He has that calm demeanor and he relates to the players and understands the grind of a season.
That sort of leadership is something the Marlins franchise has lacked for a very long time.

All in all, I like this Marlins team and I believe they will make some noise this season. Realistically, I don’t think taking them to win the World Series is a great idea. I get that there is a lot of value at 66/1, but I just don’t think that will happen.
However, if you want value and something that can realistically happen, taking the Marlins to win the division at 12/1 or taking the Marlins to make the playoffs at plus money are your best plays.
