The visiting Louisiana Tech Bulldogs have already been involved in a couple of rollercoaster games to play on the emotions in the 2017 campaign to date; maybe we’ll see similar fireworks in Dixieland this Saturday afternoon. The resurrected Alabama-Birmingham football program currently sits at .500 (2-2) but is winless in Conference USA play so far.

It’s been an emotional return to collegiate football at Legion Field. The Blazers are under the lights again for the first time since 2014, and former recruit Tim Alexander, paralyzed from a car wreck in 2006, led the team out and accepted the game ball in the team’s Week 1 win versus Alabama A&M. Clearly, it’s a wonderful story.
But reality is setting in for Alabama-Birmingham. The Blazers drew an impressive 45,000+ for their opening game, but UAB is looking average in a decidedly average conference, and they’ll have to play some decent football to sustain interest in the resurrected program.
Louisiana Tech Bulldogs
Tech has three wins on the slate already, and it was nearly four after a heartbreaking last second field goal sealed the deal for a one-point loss at South Carolina. The Bulldogs were firmly in control in that game before Carolina scored 17 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to set up the winning kick with four seconds left.
As tough as that must have been, the Bulldogs responded with a 34-16 win last week against South Alabama. A win this week at UAB will really get things rolling for them in the C-USA West division. The Bulldogs are currently second in the division, behind North Texas.

A shortage of offense hasn’t been a concern. Quarterback J’Mar Smith, the sophomore from Meridian, Mississippi, has been orchestrating the offense steadily as he’s racked up 1,320 yards and has enough mobility to be a scrambling threat. Running back Jarred Craft and WR Teddy Veal share in the production. On the other side of the ball, DB Secdrick Cooper has been a ballhawk, fresh off the Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week honors with his two interceptions against the Jaguars.
UAB Blazers
Similar to the visitors this weekend, the Blazers have moved the ball and put points on the board at will thus far in 2017. The problem is, UAB is also allowing nearly 32 points per game, which ranks a miserable 102nd in the Bowl Subdivision. Still, last week Alabama-Birmingham just narrowly lost to North Texas, 46-43, and the Mean Green are the top-ranked team in the C-USA West.

Despite being just 2-2 with the bulk of the conference schedule remaining, the Blazers are showing some promising signs. Freshman running back Spencer Brown has shown some impressive flashes (151 yards and nine yards per carry versus Ball State) and if he can get the ground game asserted, the home side might like their chances at Legion Field this Saturday. Junior WR Andre Wilson is also a stud, responsible for 13 receptions, 251 yards and three TDs to date.

This conference clash in Alabama should be a nail-biter. Both teams can score and both have exhibited sieve-like defenses this season. While a win for the Bulldogs would vault them up the Conference USA standings more tangibly, this could still be a statement of intent for the re-established Green and Gold in Birmingham. Though I think it will be tight, I give Louisiana Tech the edge in this ballgame simply because their overall slightly better roster talent. They showed us something not only with the narrow loss to an SEC foe in South Carolina, but also how they responded with a bounce-back win last week.
4* Free NCAA Betting Pick: Louisiana Tech -7
The Blazers need to continue their run-game-by-committee to chew up some clock and continue to ride the good vibes of the alumni and fan base. Once again in similar fashion with these two squads, the Blazers need to show they can respond after a disappointing close loss to the Mean Green. The happy, tidy, narrative is to see the Blazers score a home victory. We’ll see how it plays out on Saturday afternoon.
