As good as the Mountaineers are or have the potential to be, this line has been set more with Delaware State in mind.
Not only have they lost their first two contests of the season by an average of 16 points, but they haven’t won a single game since November 2015.
The question with this matchup really isn’t who is going to win, but more how much can the Mountaineers win by? Fifty-six points? Seems like a stretch. But let’s take a closer look.
Delaware State Hornets
Last week, Delaware State QB Jack McDaniels was able to complete 15 of his 30 pass attempts for 156 yards. Tailback Mike Waters ran for 67 yards on the ground (14 attempts).
The team dropped its contest to Hampton, 28-15
So far on the season, the Hornets are allowing opponents to collect 190 yards per game more than they are and have struggled to make life difficult for opposing offenses.

Going back to McDaniels, there’s one stat that stands out as particularly troubling. He’s thrown for no touchdowns through two games.
If this were a ground-dominant program, you could almost justify that. But the team has collected just 59 yards per game in its rushing attack so far.
The goal in this one can’t be to miraculously find offensive production. It has to be buckling down on defense and forcing turnovers whenever possible.
West Virginia Mountaineers
If stopping the Mountaineers is the ultimate goal for Delaware State, life is going to feel pretty unfair against this offense.
So far this season, WVU’s QB ranks first in the conference in touchdowns through the air with eight. He’s also first in passing yards with 723, as well as first in total offense per game at 390.5 yards per contest.

To make matters even more positive as far as West Virginia’s outlook goes, this team has won 10 of its last 11 home games.
On defense, the Mountaineers are allowing 25.5 points and 469.5 yards per contest. Expect those numbers to be significantly lower (in a good way for WVU fans) this week against the anemic Hornets offense.

This is the first time these two programs have ever met, but the Mountaineers have an impressive record (15-1) when hosting non-conference opponents during coach Holgorsen’s run.
But again, this isn’t about who is going to win the contest straight up. It’s about whether or not the Mountaineers can put together a showing that gets them a win against the massive spread.
4* Free NCAA Betting Pick: Delaware State ATS
The main goal for West Virginia in this contest is to escape healthy. Delaware State isn’t here to be competitive; it’s here to collect a big check for being an early sacrificial lamb in the Mountaineers’ schedule.
With all that in mind, expect the game to be a blowout by the end of the first quarter and the starters to mostly be riding the pine by the second half.
We may ultimately see West Virginia come close to covering just by virtue of a poor opponent, but playing it safe in the second half will keep it under 56 points.
