The UCLA Bruins must get geared up to face an aerially lethal Washington State squad at home on Saturday night. The Cougars have the top-ranked passing offense in the entire Bowl Subdivision this season, averaging over 417 pass yards per game.
The Bruins are capable of some passing fireworks in their own right, with talented freshman pivot Josh Rosen.

UCLA handled Cal’s dangerous passing attack en route to a 40-24 win a few weeks ago, so that augurs well for the Bruins capabilities against the visiting Cougars.
The Bruins also feature a more well-rounded offense than Wazzu, though both teams have a 4-2 Pac-12 record for their troubles to date.
It may be a question of which team can play more functional defense; though the Cougars have made strides under their new defensive co-ordinator, there is still far to go on that side of the ball in Pullman.
Washington State
WSU’s turbo-charged passing attack is led by sophomore QB Luke Falk, a Utah native with a gunslinger’s mentality. Indeed, the Cougars have three wideouts – Gabe Marks, Dom Williams and River Cracraft – with over 500 yards receiving already. Lead man Marks has 69 receptions for 865 yards and 11 TDs. The videogame-like stats continue up north in the conference.
The aforementioned defense still rank only 90th in the FBS in points surrendered on a per-game basis (over 30 per) so there’s plenty of work to be done, especially when matching up against gifted skill position players like UCLA features.
UCLA
Some were hyping the Bruins as a contender for the Pac-12 crown this year, even with true freshman Rosen under center. For the most part, he hasn’t disappointed. Head coach Jim Mora is confident in his underclassman, and Rosen has responded by leading an offense that can get the job done with either dimension.
UCLA is supported by a defense that holds opponents to less than 25 points per game, which is a relative win in the volatile Pac-12.
While do-everything athlete Myles Jack heeds Mora’s warning by withdrawing from school after suffering a torn meniscus in his knee, only reinforcing the notion that college ball needs to have a two-and-done rule in this age of frequent and profound injuries in the sport, UCLA’s players suiting up still do an admirable job.
The run game is spearheaded by Paul Perkins and freshman Soso Jamabo, a big bruiser who would remind the casual football fan of this generation’s Eddie George.
The passing game is balanced with WRs Jordan Payton and Thomas Duarte, who’ve combined for 1,418 yards passing and 12 majors.
UCLA also enjoys a strong offensive line and fantastic kicking from veteran Ka’imi Fairbairn.

UCLA’s secondary will be kept busy with the Cougars’ high-octane passing tree, but the Bruins have the well-rounded talent to be successful against this Pac-12 North division opponent. Expect Rosen to make hay against a soft defense by keeping them off-guard with a good mix of run and pass.
All the same, this could be a high-scoring affair. TAKE THE OVER!
