An appearance in the Mountain West title game is on the line, as the Aggies head to The Rocky Mountains to take on the Boise State Broncos on Saturday night.
The Utah State Aggies came within a toe of losing to Colorado State weekend, but a 29 – 24 win has now set the stage for an MWC showdown in Boise, Idaho. The Aggies are 7 – 0 in MWC play, and a win on the blue turf will likely set the stage for a showdown against Fresno State in the Mountain West Conference Championship next weekend. A loss to the Broncos on Saturday will leave the Aggies at 10 – 2, but a relative bowl appearance is still coming regardless of a disappointing result.

The Broncos know that their home field advantage consists of cold weather, and the late night start will likely have a kickoff temperature near freezing.
I went to college at Montana State, so I know a thing or two about cold mountain weather, and it might have had a bit of an effect on that Aggies offense last weekend in Fort Collins.
Utah State Aggies
The Utah State Aggies appeared to be taking a 30 – 29 loss as 4 TD favorites against the Colorado State Rams last weekend. With a review call reversing the game-winning touchdown for the Rams, the Aggies went on to take a 29 – 24 win as they head into this massive MWC game.
The chilly weather could have had an effect on the cause for slowing down the fast-paced Aggie offense, but just when we thought QB Jordan Love was in a groove, he didn’t look comfortable at all this past weekend.
Love’s leading receiver last weekend, senior Ron’Quavion Tarver, only caught 6 balls for 69 yards, and Tarver has only found the end zone twice in the last four games.

Tarver just hit the 600 yard mark on the year this past weekend, but with just a few yards he will end up having his best productivity in his final campaign with the Aggies. Tarver brought in 602 yards in his first year in 2016, and now has 16 TD in his three-year career.
Junior RB Darwin Thompson only managed 48 yards on the ground last weekend, after toppling the 140 marks in his previous two outings.
Thompson needs 110 yards to reach the 1000-yard plateau in 2018, although he could have three games left to play with a win this weekend to push them to the MWC title game next week.
Boise State Broncos
Boise State handled their business just fine last Friday night against New Mexico, and Brett Rypien continued to set the standard in the Boise State record books. Rypien completed TD pass #86 and #87 of his career in the first quarter last weekend, and his 88th TD pass put him over the 13,000-yard mark as well. Rypien is not only the Boise State all-time leader in passing yards, but he is on top of the Mountain West record books as the conferences pass leader.
While Rypien carries the torch, on offense he has quite a bit of talent around him, and a defense that no one is calling soft either. Keep in mind this defense is still without LB Riley Whimpey, DT David Moa, and safety DeAndre Pierce, and they haven’t missed a beat.

The Broncos recovered their 14th fumble of the year against New Mexico last weekend, and they trail only one other team in the category. The defense helped extend an early 14 – 7 lead to a 21 – 7 lead in the second quarter, and the Boise defense created another big turnover on the second play of the 2nd half.
Sean Modster caught 3 TD passes from Rypien, and grabbed 9 balls overall for 129 receiving yards, as the Broncos rolled to a 45 – 14 win as they get set to host the biggest game of the season this weekend.
The Broncos have taken the last 8 meetings in Idaho, and hold a 17 – 5 series lead against the Aggies.

The play is on the Broncos to deal with the cold weather, and utilize the experience of Brett Rypien for the last time on the blue turf in his career. Senior night in Boise will lead to senior success, so expect the Broncos to steal the top spot in the division, and earn their way back to the Conference title game.
