There’s a showdown in the City of Angels this Saturday afternoon, and it has major implicatons for the Pac-12 South division.
One fan base is surely happy and proud with the direction their program is headed (UCLA) while the other is surely the polar opposite (Southern Cal).
Regardless, at this moment these two ball-clubs stack up well, and this year’s Battle for the Victory Bell should be closer than it has been in years previous.

The Bruins have shown offensive competence under first-year QB Josh Rosen, though they let a late-game collapse against Washington State a couple of weeks ago add a further blemish to their season schedule.
USC, meanwhile, is reeling with the dismissal of alcoholic head coach Steve Sarkisian, and is truly looking for new direction to restore the prestigious Trojans football program to its earlier heights.
All the subtext should make for a compelling game in L.A.
UCLA
In addition to the strong play of Rosen, the blue and gold relies on talented skill-position players.
Running backs Paul Perkins (1,180 yards, 11 TDs) and Soso Jamabo (402 and four on just 65 carries) join forces with WRs Jordan Payton (71 receptions, 1,009 yards) and Thomas Duarte (nine TDs on just 46 grabs).
These elements have driven a UCLA passing attack that ranks 22nd in the FBS in passing yards per game.
The Bruins’ defense is still a work in progress, as evidenced by the 31-27 collapse against Wazzu and the 31 points it yielded against punchless Colorado.
Still, there are encouraging signs, like when they only gave up nine points last week against a good Utah team and the shutout it pitched four weeks ago versus Oregon State (41-0 UCLA victory).
UCLA definitely has the talent to beat the Trojans, but a lot depends on which Bruins defense shows up – the swarming one from last week or the unit of quitters the week before versus the Cougars.
It will also be interesting to see if Rosen gets rattled in the hotly-contested crosstown rivalry, on USC’s turf.

USC
Like it has been for so many years, there’s loads of talent on USC’s roster and they recruit heavy year after year. Still, this football program is in a relative uproar.
Athletic director Pat Haden is probably toast, after the utter mismanagement of the Sarkisian situation.
The attack is led by veteran pivot Cody Kessler, whom should present a real challenge to UCLA’s secondary this weekend.
Kessler is one of the premier passers in the nation; cracking the 3,000-yard plateau and posting a sparkling 25-6 TD/INT ratio.
He has help, too.
Wideout JuJu Smith is having a huge year (1,217 receiving yards, 10 TDs) and do-everything athlete Adoree Jackson is always electric.
The ground game has a nice three-headed monster of Ronald Jones, Justin Davis and Tre Madden.
The defense takes its cues from veteran LB Su’a Cravens. Jabari Ruffin and DT Jordan Simmons are also both impact players.
The strong recruiting yields mean that the Trojans are almost always stacked with depth, seemingly regardless of who’s coaching.
It is fair to say that with Sarkisian and Lane Kiffin before him, USC hasn’t had much luck with Haden’s recent coaching hires.
A lot of that could be forgotten with a home victory over rival UCLA and, in doing so, a Pac-12 South division crown.

Free Week 13 NCAA Football Prediction
With USC being on its home turf and perhaps still reeling over the coaching changes and remembering the shellacking they took at the hands of their cross-town rivals last year, I expect Southern Cal to win this ballgame and cover what is a small point spread.
4* Free NCAA Betting Pick: USC ATS
I could see this game either remaining low-scoring or lighting up the scoreboard, I think if one team starts hitting deep passes, the touchdowns will start coming quick and easy. Otherwise, I could see the defenses digging in.
Either way, I anticipate a fairly close game that winds up in the home team’s favor. It would wind up as a nice way for upperclassman Kessler to finish his regular-season collegiate career at USC.
