Saturday’s noon start in western Tennessee could be a barn-burner, like all of visiting UCLA’s games have been thus far.
The Bruins have showcased one of the best offensive attacks in the land, but their defense has been abysmal, plus the Bruins have to adjust to the early start time in an eastern time zone (the game is kicking off at 9am Pacific time, normally when the Bruins would be crushing their toast and OJ).
Coach Jim Mora has held some early-morning practices this week to help get acclimated, but time will tell how UCLA comes out in the road contest.

This weekend could be a prime opportunity for the Tigers, who have only played one game so far thanks to their Week 2 game in Orlando versus Central Florida being cancelled due to the nastily inclement weather in the Sunshine State recently.
Memphis’s offense may just make hay at home against a sleepy UCLA ‘D’ – literally and figuratively speaking.
UCLA Bruins
The 2-0 Bruins have so far started and ended with senior starting QB Josh Rosen, an upperclassman known for being outspoken (would you expect anything less from a field general in Tinseltown?) but also for throwing up gaudy stats on opposing defenses.
The University of California-Los Angeles, ranked 25th nationally, already has a crazy comeback under its belt after the Bruins stormed from 34 points down to come back and beat Texas A&M, 45-44.
Rosen leads all QBs in the country with nine passing TDs so far, and he hasn’t thrown an interception. The senior, who as we’ve established is not afraid of hyberbole, says it’s the best football he’s ever played.
The truth is, he might not be speaking out of turn on that one.
UCLA has also been helped WRs Caleb Wilson and Darren Andrews, who are reaping the fruit of Rosen’s efforts. They’ve already combined to register 34 receptions for 473 yards and six TDs, and we’re only in Week 3. Pretty impressive stuff.

If only UCLA’s defensive unit could be so inspiring. Through the first two matches, the Bruins are a lousy 105th nationally in points against, and that includes a match against the relative cannon fodder of Hawaii.
Not only that, but UCLA may be missing four starting defenders this weekend – LB Kenny Young and safeties Jaleel Wadood and Adarius Pickett are injured and LB Josh Woods is suspended for the first half for “targeting.”
So the ‘D’ is not only in need of improvement, it’s shorthanded versus Memphis.
Memphis Tigers
The Tigers, perhaps first seen as a basketball school, have a similarly explosive offense on the gridiron as their compeition this weekend.
However, Memphis makes its hay in the ground game as opposed to UCLA’s aerial bombardment.
Running back Darrell Henderson already has 169 yards and a pair of majors on the year, and Memphis’s run attack sits ninth in the country with 319 yards to date.
The Tigers pass attack is positively pop-gun, so the big uglies for the Tigers will have to keep opening big holes against the undermanned Bruins.

Memphis is certainly capable of keeping it close and maybe giving the visitors a scare.
Yet, it is hard to bet against an experienced signal-caller that is a bona fide Heisman Trophy candidate in the early season.
Still, relatively new Memphis head coach Mike Norvell has been doing a great job, and was recently rewarded with an extension from the school until 2021.

Memphis is on the right track, but can the defense – which surrendered 29 points to Louisiana-Monroe in Week 1 – do anything to rein in UCLA’s high-octane attack?
I don’t see it happening. Rosen is looking like a man among boys right now, he’s primed to take his talent to the next level.
As such, he should continue to make mincemeat out of Memphis’ secondary, but this will be crucial, because Memphis can likely score on the visitors, and control the clock in the process too.
4* Free NCAA Betting Pick: UCLA -7.
A quick-strike attack is important for the Bruins to control the energy in the visiting building and thus make the Tigers shoot themselves in the foot with running extra clock with the succession of hand-offs.
Also, Memphis has had an early bye week with the active hurricane season, how does it respond from that in a time of the season when you want to find a rhythm?
Expect plenty of points to be scored, but ultimately expect the Bruins to have the larger number in the Liberty Bowl Stadium on Saturday.
