The UAB Blazers sit in first place the Conference USA West Division standings. Let that soak in for a second, because there wasn’t even a UAB football team just two years ago.
The Blazers went 8 – 4 in their FBS returning 2017 campaign that resulted in a Bahamas Bowl appearance, This year’s team has already ensured they’ll be making back-to-back bowl appearances, after earning their sixth victory of the season last weekend.

The UTEP Miners have not only gone 0 – 7 this season, but they have also lost 19 games in a row dating back to their 0 – 12 2017 campaign.
Navigating the quarterback carousel has not helped matters much for the Miners this season, as both Kai Locksley and Ryan Metz have been sidelined to injuries of late.
UAB Blazers
The UAB Blazers have won five consecutive games, and they’ve done with their defense. Once again, the Blazer’s D stepped up their game last weekend, and continued to be a force in their 29 – 21 win over North Texas.
If you have played the total to stay under the number in UAB Blazer games this season, you are 6 – 1 with those bets. I wrote up that game here at Cappers Picks last weekend, and predicted a 29 – 19 result, which easily stayed under the 54.5 total. Missed it by that much, although admittedly I thought North Texas would provide the upset.
Regardless, the Blazers did allow 400 total yards to the Mean Green offense run by Mason Fine. Fine threw for 3 TDs in the loss to UAB last weekend, although North Texas were held off the scoreboard in the entire second half of the game. North Texas took a 21 – 10 lead to the half, while UAB outscored the Mean Green 19 – 0 in the second stanza.
Senior QB A.J Erdley had an efficient outing last weekend, going 14 for 22 with 189 passing yards. Sophomore RB Spencer Brown stole the show in the second half, scoring three touchdowns on the day including the score that gave UAB the lead in the fourth quarter. Brown ran for 100 yards on 25 carries, and was the only man to find the end zone for the Blazers on the day.

UTEP Miners
Despite the 0 – 19 record over the last two seasons, the Miners have been competitive in their last 4 losses. Senior QB Ryan Metz returned to the field last weekend after passing concussion protocol, although Brandon Jones ended up finishing the game.
The offense has struggled all season long, and ranks 121st in total yards and 126th in points scored (17.6 PPG). The Miners only returned two starters from last year’s offense that ranked 126th or lower in 7 of 9 offensive categories.
Miners Head Coach Dana Dimel came over from Kansas State hoping to change the dynamic in El Paso this season. Offensive coordinator Mike Canales was asked to turn the offense around, and that has simply not happened.
The defense has been what has kept UTEP in the last four games after being shutout 28 – 0 at Tennessee a month ago. The Miners held LA Tech to 1 of 11 on third down conversion attempts last weekend, albeit in a 31 – 24 loss. The defense caused two fumbles, and gave the offense a chance to tie the game late in the fourth quarter.

UAB was favored at -21 last season when they started playing together in Conference USA, and came away with a 28 – 7 win. This line seems a bit inflated since UTEP is at least showing they are not simply going away, despite having lost 19 straight games.

Free Week 9 NCAA Football Pick
This line opened with UAB being 18.5-point favorites, and it has fallen to 16 or 16.5 depending on your book. The line could fluctuate all week long, as I see the dog covering at home in this contest. UAB and UTEP might be in a race to 20 points, although the 48.5 total could be tricky.
4* Free NCAA Betting Pick: The UAB Blazers are favored at -16.5, with a 48.5 showing on the total. Free ATS or O/U final score pick provided below!
The total should be left alone, although I will admit I think this one might sneak in over the 48.5 offer. The play to make should aim towards getting +17 on UTEP, should you have to buy it up. This is great combo-material in my opinion, so move the line up to get at least +17 on UTEP, and put it with another play in a parlay. I don’t usually recommend parlay’s, but when I do, I drink Dos Equis!
Regardless, UTEP should cover the line and keep it close throughout the night in El Paso.
