One thing that has been a guarantee this college football season is that when Texas Tech is playing, there is going to be lots and lots of points.

This Big 12 matchup features two solid pocker passers in Patrick Mahomes and Shane Buechele and their ability will be on full display in this early day matchup.
Texas Longhorns
This up and down season for the Longhorns featured early season overreactions where people were calling that Texas was “back” but now head coach Charlie Strong is on the hot seat.
A majority of the Longhorns’ struggles this season have come defensively and that doesn’t look good in their upcoming matchup.
They will have their hands full with Mahomes and the nation’s top passing offense.
But, Buechele will have his chance to put up good passing numbers against a Red Raider defense that has given up 305 passing yards and 41 points per game.

Texas had a big win last week against Baylor which may have helped Strong keep his job just a little longer. Now, the Longhorn defense could end up costing him his job if they get embarrassed by Mahomes.
This is the type of game where Strong will be forced to make some decisions to go for it on fourth down or not take the field goal in hopes of getting a touchdown. The more drives you come away from without points against the Red Raiders, the bigger trouble you are in.
Mahomes will make you pay for any turnovers and any quick drives. It will be up to Buechele to protect the football and convert on third and fourth down.
Regardless, Buechele should be poised for a big day as this Texas Tech defense is very bad.
Texas Tech Red Raiders
Mahomes is in the midst of one of the best quarterback seasons we have ever seen and his matchup this week is another opportunity to build on what he has already done.
He set the FBS record for passing yards in a game with 734 in a loss to Oklahoma. The Red Raider offense on the season is averaging 500 passing yards per game.
Every team knows what is coming when you play Texas Tech but yet still can’t find ways to stop it most of the time.
The only way to beat them is to outscore them – which is a dangerous gameplan.

It seems at times as if Mahomes feeds off of how poor his defense is. When they give up points, he responds. The games they have slowed their opponent, he seems to be less explosive.
However, the ability of Buechele to sit in the pocket and throw should give the Red Raider defense some issues. And, therefore I would expect Mahomes to respond with another historic performance.

If you like points, watch this game.
There are going to be lots and lots of them. Buechele and Mahomes are going to have a duel that will remind us of the late night Colt McCoy and Graham Harrell duel that ended with a Michael Crabtree touchdown as time expired.

Texas Tech’s defense is too bad to ever feel comfortable taking them to cover a spread. But, they should win this one in a shootout.
