Both the Texas Longhorns and Texas Tech Red Raiders have concerns with the health of their starting quarterbacks. As each team looks to snap modest two-game losing slides entering week 11, a one highly anticipated showdown could be overshadowed by injuries.
Texas Head Coach Tom Herman was quoted Tuesday as saying that “QB Sam Ehlinger’s shoulder injury is still not fully healed.” Despite the news, Ehlinger is expected to go this weekend again, and he has not missed a game all season.

The news was not so good for Tech Head Coach Kliff Kingsbury when it came to his starting QB, Alan Bowman. Kingsbury confirmed on Tuesday that Bowman is still hospitalized after suffering a partially collapsed lung last weekend. Bowman came out of the game at halftime complaining of breathing issues, and we can only surmise that he would be doubtful to return against Texas this weekend.
Of course, I wish him a speedy recovery, because hearing that kind of stuff reminds you how life can change so suddenly.
Texas Longhorns
The Longhorns became bowl eligible three weeks ago, when they won their sixth game of the year over Baylor, 23 – 17. After two straight losses to Oklahoma State and W. Virginia, the Horns still come in to Lubbock favored by a point.
Despite the on-going shoulder issues for QB Sam Ehlinger, he is one of many Longhorn players who appear on this weeks injury report. Although Ehlnger will likely make a go of it again, his effectiveness will be questioned should they flop this weekend against Texas Tech.

Most of the injuries, however, are on the defensive side of the ball for the Longhorns. As a whole this year, the Texas defense has been holding their own, outside of the three games between Oklahoma State, Oklahoma and West Virginia. The Horns have been in the middle of the pack all year statistically on defense, but the passing stats are starting to add up against them.
Texas could be without 3 DBs, 2 LBs, and 2 D linemen this weekend, which could have an impact on this game.
Luckily, the Texas Tech defense ranks 125th in the nation against the pass, so the defense for both sides could be in the spotlight all night in Lubbock, TX.
Texas Tech Red Raiders
With Alan Bowman out of the lineup, Sophomore QB Jeff Duffey will likely get the start under center this weekend against Texas. Duffey came in and finished the game last weekend against Oklahoma, after Bowman came out of the game at halftime.
It’s a shame that Bowman had to leave the game against Oklahoma, because he was already having himself quite a day. In one half of football, Bowman led the Red Raiders to a 31- 28 halftime lead and had 227 passing yards to go along with his 2 TD passes. He only had 5 balls go incomplete, and ended up 21 for 26 on the cut-short afternoon.
Jeff Duffey got off to a rough start replacing Bowman in the 2nd half, and the Sooners outscored Texas Tech 23 – 15 to go on to win 51 – 46. Oklahoma scored on their first possession of the 3rd quarter, and never relinquished the lead again.

The Red Raiders had an opportunity to tie the game at 42 mid-way through the 4th quarter, but a failed 2-point conversion left Texas Tech at 42- 40 and the Sooners scored the last 9 points of the contest to keep their NCAA Playoff hopes alive at 8 – 1. The Sooners jumped to 6th in the Playoff rankings with their win over Texas Tech last weekend.
This total fell from 65 to 63.5 and it looks like the Horns are slowly moving to -2 from the opening -1 line
The loss of Alan Bowman has probably convinced the public that his absence is significant enough to make a play on Texas.

The play here again goes to the total, as it looks like that might be my theme all weekend. Hopefully the line falls even further to 62, but as I put this pick out there, I have 63.5 showing as the number to beat.
Sold! The Texas Tech offense should still put up numbers with Duffey, and Ehlnger is almost certainly playing again.
