A pair of 7-4 Pac-12 teams clash at Memorial Stadium on Saturday, as the Stanford Cardinal and California Bears make up their PPD game from two weekends ago. The Stanford Axe will be up for grabs again, although the Big Game has gone to the Cardinal for the last 8 seasons.
The California fires caused the original week 12 meeting to be canceled, so now the two can get back to the field this Saturday to close out their regular season schedules.

Stanford got off to a terrific 4 – 0 start to the 2018 season, but a 1 – 4 run had the Cardinal facing a 5 – 4 record with 3 games to play. Now riding a modest 2-game win streak, the Cardinal hope to continue to their dominance in the Big Game rivalry.
The Cal Bears have atoned for their 5-win campaign a year ago under now second-year head coach Justin Wilcox, who can now at least claim that he is over .500 in his career on the sidelines. Cal is now 12 – 11 under Wilcox and this team already provided a big storyline when they upset USC, who also had a lengthy win streak snapped by Cal this season.
Stanford Cardinal
Stanford leads the series over Cal with a 63 – 46 – 11 record in the storied rivalry that dates back to 1892. I don’t know where you were in 1892, but well, none of us were there so let’s move on.
Stanford has had a grasp on the Stanford Axe for 8 years, although they had been a ranked team in 6 of those meetings. Neither team is near the top-25 in the nation, but Stanford is once again favored with the line setters expecting a 9th straight win over Cal.
Last year’s game was the second time of the 8 recent meetings that came down to a field goal deciding the affair, as Stanford escaped with a 17 – 14 win.
While both teams will likely be playing a bowl game after Christmas, a 8th win for the Cardinal could have them playing in a New Year’s Eve bowl, although a loss to Cal could move things around.

The Cardinal has scored 97 points in their last 2 wins over Oregon State and UCLA, and it’s not because of the strength in the running game as most would suspect. Bryce Love is not exactly having a stellar campaign, as he managed only one 100-yard game all season.
The Stanford faithful can essentially thank K.J Costello for having stayed healthy all season, and making his junior year one to remember. Costello has thrown 9 TD passes over the last two wins and has a 28 / 11 TD to INT ratio this season.
California Bears
The Bears are 4 – 1 in their last 5 games, and the defensive unit is certainly to thank in Berkeley lately.
Cal’s defense scored twice last weekend against Colorado, both in the first quarter, in fact. With 21 1st quarter points to start the game last weekend, the Bears cruised to a comfortable 33 – 21 win over the Buffaloes here in Berkeley.
The Bears have only given up more than 24 points twice all season, and that came to Oregon and UCLA in week 5 and 7 this year. The Cal defense ranks 16th overall in total yards allowed (319.1 TYPG) and rank 19th against the pass (182.5 YPG).
While the defense has carried its weight in 2018, the Cal offense hasn’t exactly held up their end of the bargain. The Cal offense ranks 113th in total yards (350.5) and average 23.6 points per game (109th).

Luckily, Cal has a senior RB that has blown away the numbers of Bryce Love in 2018. Despite needing 181 yards to go over the 1000-yard mark, he will have two games to reach the mark with a bowl game coming after this weekend.
His running stats are phenomenal and you will see a blue and gold #28 with the ball in his hands on the ground and in the passing game.
Let the rivalry be renewed, because with both teams at 7 – 4 there is still reason to go out and get a big win. Cal would love nothing more than to beat USC and Stanford in the same season, something we have not seen in quite some time.
