Southern Miss is coming off a strong 2015 season but they lost their coach to the NFL this offseason in a surprising move. Still with a senior quarterback coming back they are in pretty good shape for new coach Jay Hopson.

Kentucky is not going to been in the race in the SEC. The most they can hope for is winning the games they are supposed to.
The problem is I am not sure this is one of those. If they are overlooking Southern Miss they might have a tough start to the season.
Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles
In 2015 the Golden Eagles were a significant offensive threat.
They can be once again thanks to senior quarterback Nick Mullens. He and returning running back Ito Smith give USM one of the best backfields in the conference and a great chance to have enough offensive firepower to keep Southern Miss in the hunt.

This is probably an underrated Southern Miss team. The program was once a mid major darling that was not afraid to take on the big boys. Over the last four seasonseasons that has not worked out well for USM.
The last time they beat a Power 5 team was in 2011 and most of the results have not been pretty.
Kentucky Wildcats
The Wildcats have been upgrading their talent under coach Stoops but it has yet to produce real results on the field. This year cold be the year as they have nine returning starters on offense.
If they are going to have a winning season this year it will be because that group performs at a high level.

UK ran off a decent SEC quarterback in Patrick Towles to give the job to highly touted sophomore Drew Barker. Barker may look the part but he did not show a ton last season.
The defense was mediocre last season and that might even be a ceiling this season. Their top playmakers from a year ago aregarding gone.

Free Week 1 NCAA Football Prediction
Normally an SEC vs. CUSA matchup would be an easy win for the SEC but that may not be the case here. Kentucky is at home but that is not exactly a lions den.
The spread is only 6 which shows just how close these teams really are.
4* Free NCAA Betting Pick: Southern Miss +6
There is a very real chance of an upset here. The Southern Miss offense led by Mullens should be able to move the ball and come up with enough stops to have this game decided by whoever has the ball last.
