At a glance, this may seem like a relatively easy one to pick. However, this could actually be a much more intriguing matchup than it seems. These two teams have only met twice before, including a 34-10 comeback victory by Southern Miss last year.
In 2014, the Roadrunners completely stifled the Southern Miss offense and won 12-10. On the surface, a 4-1 team with more name recognition should be a huge favorite over a team with a 1-3 record and a smaller football program, but those records can be a bit deceiving.
UTSA has played a relatively tough schedule already, and aside from a big win over Kentucky and a loss to Troy, Southern Miss has not really been tested.
Unfortunately, this one won’t be a huge test either, but it could be closer than it might seem.
Southern Miss Golden Eagles
The Golden Eagles started out their season very strong with a 44-35 comeback win against an SEC opponent in Kentucky. Their high-flying offense helped them to dominate Savannah State the following week in a 56-0 shutout.
However, the strong start may have caused them to let their guard down. Troy jumped on them early in Hattiesburg and did not let up. The 37-31 home loss was their only defeat of the season, and they have come back even stronger since.
Their defense dominated at UTEP, winning 34-7, and the offense led the way last week, beating Rice 44-28 last week.

Senior quarterback Nick Mullens has led the high-powered Southern Miss offense to their 4-1 record. He’s completing 61 percent of his passes, with 1504 yards and 13 touchdowns.
Unfortunately for the Golden Eagles, he has also thrown seven interceptions, and ball security should be a huge focus this week.
Junior running back Ito Smith has also been a huge part of their success, running for 617 yards and five touchdowns already this year.
This combination has helped them score 209 points already in their first five games.
The defense has been good at times, shutting out Savannah State and allowing only seven points against UTEP, but the offense will be the key to victory Saturday.
UTSA Roadrunners
The University of Texas at San Antonio has faced a rough stretch already this season and are on a three game losing streak.
They started off relatively well with a 26-13 home win over Alabama State, but their competition has gotten much tougher since.
They were competitive the following week at Colorado State, but fell 23-14. The last two weeks have seen them lose at home against a tough Arizona State team 32-28 and at Old Dominion 33-19.
Last week was a bye for the Roadrunners, and they hope to have gotten some things figured out during the time off.

The Roadrunners offense has been pretty anemic in most of their games this year.
They have struggled particularly running the ball, with their leading rusher, running back Jalen Rhodes, having only 197 yards in four games.
The whole offense is only averaging 2.8 yards per carry.
The passing attack has been somewhat better, with quarterback Dalton Sturm completing 61 percent of his passes with seven touchdowns and only three interceptions.
If they hope to compete against the Southern Miss defense, they will need to improve in both areas.
NCAA Football Handicapping Trends
- Both meetings between these teams have been Under: 44 points scored last year and only 22 in 2014
- The Roadrunners play much better at home this year, going 1-1 with point differential of +9
- Southern Miss is averaging 41.8 PPG this year
Free Week 6 NCAA Football Prediction
UTSA probably stands little chance of winning this one, but they have played Southern Miss close in their last two games.
They are already behind the Golden Eagles by 1.5 games in the C-USA West, and need a conference win to stay competitive.
Their 1-3 record is deceiving, since they have played a tougher schedule than Southern Miss early in the year.
With a bye last week, they may have had time to figure out a better run-pass balance.
4* Free NCAA Betting Pick: Under 59
Aside from the comeback win against Kentucky in Lexington, Southern Miss has not been tested this season. Not to say this will be a huge test for them, but these two have played each other close before.
The Golden Eagles are playing LSU in Baton Rouge next week and could easily overlook UTSA this week. However, the high powered offense of Southern Miss will probably be far too much for the Roadrunners to hope to contain.
