The San Jose State Spartans picked up their first win of the 2018 campaign last weekend, 50 – 37 over UNLV. Junior QB Josh Love is starting to gain control of the offense, although the defensive issues still need to be addressed.
The Spartans only won two games last season under first-year head coach Brent Brennan. One of those wins was on the final game of the season against this Wyoming team, so maybe win 2 of 2018 could be coming. The line setters have listed the Spartans as +13.5 underdogs in Laramie this weekend, despite being 3 – 6 and barely clinging to hopes to become bowl eligible themselves.

The Wyoming Cowboys decided to make a move at quarterback last weekend, as freshmen Sean Chambers was called into action making his first start for the team. Chambers did okay, navigating the second half of the game much better after getting off to a slow first half start.
Wyoming took a 3 – 0 lead to the half against Colorado State last weekend, but came away with a 34 – 21 win to snap their four-game losing slide.
San Jose State Spartans
Josh Love is gaining more respect from his team mates as each weekend goes by. The Spartans still have the 130th ranked rushing attack in the nation, but things are improving in San Jose.
The Spartans put up 50 points for the first time under Brent Brennan last weekend. Despite the 7 losses on the season, three of those games were decided by 6 points or less, two being within a field goal.
San Jose State had a 100-yard receiver, a100-yard rusher, and Love went 25 for 36 with 335 passing yards that led to 4 TD passes in the 50 – 37 win over UNLV last weekend.

The Spartans were -2 point favorites as an 0 – 7 team, and indeed went on to end their losing streak to start the season.
While the offense did their part in securing their first win of 2018, the defense almost let it all get away.. again. UNLV gained 554 total yards against the Spartans and allowed 4 TD passes to Max Gilliam, although they picked him off 3 times as well.
Sophomore RB Tyler Nevens had his best day as a collegiate, toppling the 100-yard mark for the first time in his career last weekend.
Wyoming Cowboys
The Wyoming Cowboys went their first seven games without scoring more than 19 points in any contest. Everyone wondered what affect the loss of Josh Allen would have on the offense, and until last weekend matters had only gotten worse. Even with Josh Allen, the Cowboys were 125th in the nation in total yards last season, and that’s exactly where they are through 9 weeks of the 2018 campaign.
The Cowboys only have three games remaining and must win all three to become bowl eligible. Wyoming will have their bye week coming after this game, giving them two weeks to prepare for Air Force, who come to Laramie on November 17. The Cowboys travel to New Mexico to finish out the 2018 campaign, so it’s basically 3 – 0 or bust.
Making a change at quarterback had to be done last weekend, and it obviously paid early dividends. Despite the slow start, the offense got on track on the ground, and pounded the rock 55 times for 297 rushing yards in the win.

Sean Chambers is certainly going to change the dynamic with his ability to utilize his legs in the run game. He gained 101 yards on 22 carries, and found the end zone once with his feet, and twice with his arm.
While the offense got it going under Chambers’ guidance, the defense caused two interceptions in the win, adding to the team result that Wyoming needed desperately.
This total is almost too hysterical to mention more than once. Whether it climbs to 41 or 42 as the kickoff draws closer, these two offenses should be just fine against each other.
