The prestigious Maize and Blue of the University of Michigan Wolverines got off to a great start to 2017, but have hit the rocks over the past few weeks. The drop-off from national relevancy should be enough to motivate Coach Jim Harbaugh’s men to an inspired performance at home against lowly Big Ten foe Rutgers.

Michigan was looking like a real player in the conference and maybe deserving of a Bowl Subdivision Playoff spot, thanks in large part to its impactful defense.
Yet, the Wolverines gave up 20 points to Indiana two weeks ago and then a whopping 42 points to Big Ten juggernaut Penn State. In doing so, Michigan waved goodbye to Playoff aspirations and its Top 25 ranking.
Someone must endure this wrath of frustration; this weekend’s visitors from New Jersey seem as well-suited as anyone.
Rutgers Scarlet Knights
The Knights actually have the same in-conference record as UM this season, both sitting at 2-2. The prime difference is that Michigan has won all three of its non-conference games, while the Knights fell to Washington and lowly Eastern Michigan.
A win against FCS minnow Howard is Rutgers’s lone non-conference victory on the slate. Not exactly a rousing endorsement from the crew from East Brunswick, NJ.
If Rutgers is to do anything to avoid being blown out in Ann Arbor this Saturday, it must start with improved scoring. Although averaging nearly 27 points per game may seem impressive to those NFL fans out there, the Knights’ ranking of 26.7 per is good for just 84th in the nation, and is skewed by the 65-0 drubbing that Rutgers gave crappy Howard.
The home team prides itself on defense and needs a re-set after the Penn State debacle, so scoring more points may be a futile enterprise for the visitors.

Michigan Wolverines
Last week’s Penn State tilt had all the lookings of a marquee game, but the Wolverines crapped the bed en route to losing 42-13. Harbaugh, his gargantuan ego and his players and staff must have been licking their wounds after that one.
Michigan, with fans and boosters alike that hold very high standards for the program, needs a response at home this week.

The aforementioned defense has been excellent aside from last week’s disappointment. It doesn’t look like UM will have trouble stymying Rutgers, but the Wolverines need some more reliable performances on the other side of the ball.
Neither starting QB has inspired confidence, be it recent starter John O’Korn or his predecessor Wilson Speight.
Sure, it’s not all doom and gloom; the RB duo of Ty Isaac and Karan Higdon has been impressive (combining for 885 yards and eight TDs to date) and kicker Quinn Nordin has simply been one of America’s best – 14 for 16 on field goals, 18 for 19 on converts and 4/5 on attempts longer than 40 yards.
Still, things will be far easier if Michigan can discover some offensive balance.
Free Week 9 NCAA Football Pick
Rutgers doesn’t have an especially strong defense, and there’s little doubt that Michigan is going to come out into the “Big House” this Saturday looking to show what it can do.
4* Free NCAA Betting Pick: Michigan -17.
I think the Wolverines have proven themselves to be a paper tiger; they are only sitting fourth in the Big Ten East division, and this is a team that has aspirations of a Top 5 ranking and contending for a National Championship. Still, Michigan’s depth and talent level is vastly superior to visiting Rutgers.
The added motivation that UM is bound to have (if they don’t, Coach Harbaugh should feel his seat growing warmer) should translate into the home side winning handily. It would be surprising – and a great disappointment to 100,000+ fans in attendance at one of the college game’s elite venues – to see the Wolverines win by less than double-digit points.
