Portland State was winless last season. They battled some teams tough, including BYU (20-6) and Oregon State (35-32) the first two weeks, but they couldn’t win a single Big Sky game.

Nevada will be happy opening up the season at Mackay Stadium against an FCS opponent. This is a must-win game for the Wolfpack, as the schedule gets tough after week 1.
Portland State Vikings
I’m not sure the Vikings will be able to open up the season with a win. In fact, I’m not sure they’ll be able to keep it close against the Wolfpack after losing their two top WRs from last season.
Trent Riley and Darnell Edwards are gone, which will hurt the Vikings passing attack. They were good through the air last season (259.4 PYPG), but they had trouble finishing drives with TDs (23.3 PPG).

While the offense wasn’t terrible, the defense was dreadful. The Vikings allowed 493.3 YPG, which was the second worst mark in the FCS. They also allowed 43 PPG, which was 3rd worst in the FCS.
The defense will be improved this season, as the defensive front is stronger, but will that matter in a game against the Wolfpack who are known to air it out early and often?
Nevada Wolfpack
Nevada went 3-9 last season with all of the wins coming during conference play. They’ll look to jump out to an early start this season with a home game against a cupcake FCS opponent.
QB Ty Gangi will have a more productive season this year. Last season the Wolfpack averaged 270.4 PYPG (32nd in FBS) and that number could increase, as the WR corps is loaded.

The problem last season was the defense. Nevada allowed 471.3 YPG (119th) and 33.9 PPG (106th). To have any chance at being bowl eligible the team will need to improve defensively.
At the end of the day, I can’t imagine the Wolfpack will lose to Portland State. The passing attack will get going early against a weak defense and once they build the lead they can start running it more.
NCAA Football Handicapping Trends
- Nevada is 5-2 ATS in its last 7 games.
- The total has gone over in 4 of Nevada’s last 6 games.
- Portland State is 2-16 SU in its last 18 games on the road.
Free Week 1 NCAA Football Pick
There is still no betting line out for this week 1 game, but the Wolfpack will be favoured. The question is how big the spread will be? However, I have the Wolfpack winning by at least three TDs.

Nevada have a solid passing attack that the Vikings won’t be able to shutdown. Portland State may score a couple TDs, but losing their top two WRs will hurt them early in the year.
