Raise your hand if you can say that you expected North Texas and UAB to be meeting in week 8, and both teams would only have 1 loss on the season — Anyone? If you’re talking about surprises around the landscape of college football this season, here is one example of that.
The Mean Green are a blocked field goal away from being perfect in 2018, their only loss coming to LA Tech, 29 – 27. North Texas climbed out to a 21 – 6 lead over LA Tech, only to have their game-winning FG attempt with :33 left to play get batted away.

The Blazers are riding a 4-game win streak into this weekend, and are looking to become bowl eligible for the second consecutive season with a home win against the Mean Green.
The Blazers and Mean Green were involved in a good, old-fashioned shootout last season in Texas. North Texas escaped with a 46 – 43 win, although the Blazers went on to win 8 games last year. UAB will looking to return the favor this time around at Legion Field.
North Texas Mean Green
The Mean Green have clinched a bowl bid after finding their sixth win of the season last weekend.
Junior QB Mason Fine set the single-season passing record last season, when he put up 4,052 yards. His 31 TD passes was also a single-season record for the program last year, so his return was expected to have a big impact this season. It has, and not only is offense clicking, but the Mean Green defense is proving what they are worth as well.

The North Texas defense ranks 7th in the country in rushing yards allowed per game, only allowing 97 yards per contest. The Mean Green rank 19th in the country in points allowed per game as well, giving up only 17.6 PPG.
Last weekend against Southern Mississippi, the Mean Green allowed a total of 50 rushing yards to the Eagles. Southern Miss QB Jack Abraham spent most of his game being rushed and confused, while losing 37 yards from sacks.
Mason Fine could move to fifth on the North Texas all-time passing leaderboard this weekend. He is 351 yards shy of Scott Hall, who accumulated 5,975 passing yards in his career at North Texas.
UAB Blazers
Well if we’re going to continue talking about defenses, let’s stay right here and discuss what the Blazers are doing this season. You do not need to look very far in the rankings to find UAB’s defensive statistics nationally. The Blazers are 3rd against the pass in the nation, 5th in points allowed, and 6th in total yards allowed.
This defense has shutout Savannah State and Rice, and held LA Tech and Charlotte to 7 points each. Had it not been for that quirky loss to Coastal Carolina in week 2, 47 – 24, the stats could look even better than they do now.
We do know that UAB is going to run the ball early and often this weekend at home. They rely heavily on the ground game to move the ball, and it’s working okay so far. UAB ranks 21st in the nation running the ball, although they certainly don’t have much of a passing game to speak of.
WR Xavier Ubosi leads UAB in receiving yards this season, with his 335 yards and 3 TDs. He has only caught 10 passes this year, however he does average 33.3 a pop, which looks pretty good, doesn’t it?
Spencer Brown handles the lion-share of the carries for UAB, as he’s accumulated 491 yards on 109 totes this year. Senior QB A.J Erdely and freshman RB Lucious Stanley have combined for 444 yards on 84 carries to boot.
[dfads params=’groups=219&limit=1&return_javascript=1′]
Even though Erdely won’t do much damage to opposing defenses with his arm, he has captured 1181 passing yards this season. That won’t put too much fear in the opposing defensive back field, but he will tuck it in and beat you with his feet in a moment’s notice.
As one might expect a low-scoring game here, it could be a tricky spot for a total of 54.5. You can see that all 7 of the Mean Green games have come in under the total. The under is 5 – 1 in six UAB contests this year, which is why you will see the trending stats below revealing as much.
