Two historical powerhouses of college football will face off in the Music City Bowl this year.
Although this is not where either of these teams expected to be at year’s end, they both have a chance to salvage something of 2016 with a victory in Nashville.
The Cornhuskers looked like a legitimate contender for the Big 10 title, starting the season 7-0.
They then dropped three of their last five, including 40-10 loss at rival Iowa that knocked them out of the championship game.

The #21 Volunteers were a similar story but even more disappointing in 2016. Tennessee was the popular favorite to dominate the SEC East and contend for a playoff spot this year, but injuries and inexplicable losses late in the year landed them here.
These teams have a history with each other in bowl games, and both will be highly motivated to win this one.
Nebraska Cornhuskers
Nebraska surprised everyone to start the year, going 7-0 and jumping into the top 10 halfway through the year.
However, nagging injuries to quarterback Tommy Armstrong, inconsistent play offensively and a tough schedule caused them to lose three of their last five games.
They were still in position to go to the Big 10 Championship in the last week of the season but were absolutely demolished at Iowa.
Although they had higher aspirations, this is still a team on its way up, and they would love a chance to close 2016 out the right way.

As of now, it is unclear who will be under center for the Huskers.
Tommy Armstrong was expected to be ready, but he is still absent from practice. On the year, Armstrong is 2,180 yards, 14 touchdowns and eight interceptions.
He has also rushed for 512 yards and eight scores. Ryker Fyfe, who has played during Armstrong’s injuries, has thrown for 315 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.
The Defense is the strength of the Cornhuskers. They allow opponents only 350.8 yards per game which ranks them 21st in the nation. They allow 22.8 points per game, ranking them 31st in scoring D.
Tennessee Volunteers
This was the year it was all supposed to come together in Rocky Top. It is head coach Butch Jones’s fourth year, and the Vols are filled with highly talented recruits, many of which are now upperclassmen.
They began the season ranked 9th and were expected to run through the SEC East, compete to win the conference and have a shot at the playoffs.
There are many reasons why that is not how things turned out. However, the #21 Volunteers have a chance to salvage something of the year in this game, and a Music City Bowl Championship would give the Vols some redemption and a boost going into the offseason.

This will be senior quarterback Josh Dobbs’s last game as a Volunteer.
He leads the SEC in touchdown passes (26), touchdowns responsible for (35) and quarterback rating (152.6). He also leads the Vols in rushing with 713 yards and nine scores on the ground.
Running back Alvin Kamara also has nine rushing touchdowns– as well as four receiving– and can bust the big play at any time.
Tennessee scores 36.2 points per game which ranks 25th in CFB. They rack up 437.2 yards per game, 203.2 of which are on the ground. The defense, well that’s another story.
The Vols rank 109th in total defense, 113th in passing defense and 73rd in scoring defense.

These teams have not met since the 90’s where Nebraska defeated Tennessee in both the 1997 Orange Bowl and the 1999 Fiesta Bowl. They are two historically great programs that are fighting their way back into national relevance.
The key matchup in this game will be the Nebraska running game against the Tennessee defense. The Vols will definitely put points on the board, but will the Huskers’ offense be able to keep up?
4* Free NCAA Betting Pick: Tennessee -3.0
The answer is no. Tennessee is the more talented team, and this is almost a home game for them. Joshua Dobbs will put on another amazing show in his last collegiate game, and Tennessee will end the season on a high note.
