In 2015, UConn went to 22nd ranked Missouri’s stadium and lost 9-6 – failing on a fake field goal late in the game that could’ve won the game for them.

Both teams have completed switched their identities since then – moving from defensively strong teams to very weak defensive teams. Missouri and UConn currently rank 118th and 120th in the nation in points allowed per game.
Missouri Tigers
This has been a year to forget for the Missouri Tigers defense. Often feared as a unit and having produced multiple SEC defensive players of the year and NFL draft picks, the Tigers can’t stop anyone this season.
They are 2-5 on the season – allowing 42 points per game in their 5 losses and still allowing 32 per game in their two wins.

They’re bad against both the run and the pass – allowing 4.7 yards per rush and an opponent passer rating of 152.9.
On the offensive side though, they have been strong. While allowing 39 points per game, they still are managing to score 33 points per game. Led by quarterback Drew Lock, the Tigers are 13th in the nation in yards per play with 6.5.
Lock has been one of the more productive quarterbacks in the country but the offense is turning the ball over the 8th most times per game in the nation.
Lock has slung it all over the field nearly every week and I wouldn’t expect it to be much different this week against a UConn defense that has also struggled. It will come down to his and the rest of the offense’s ability to limit those turnovers. UConn can score it too so if Missouri turns it over on the road, they could be playing from behind all game long.
Connecticut Huskies
The Huskies have won 2 straight – both conference games – after a rough start to the season and are at home for another potentially winnable game.

All of the defensive stats on Missouri seemed bad but UConn has hardly any better. They have been better the last two weeks but still are allowing 36.6 points per game on the season.
They have given up 38 or more in each of their losses but have held their opponents to 24 or less in all 3 of their wins.
This random non-conference game in the middle of the season is change of pace from the AAC style of play but it is a bad matchup for the Huskies.
The Huskies have struggled tremendously against the pass – allowing an average of 8.8 yards per pass attempt. They have sacked the quarterback 16 times on the season but 6 of those came last week.
UConn allowed Memphis quarterback Riley Ferguson to throw for 7 touchdowns on them as he led Memphis to score 70 points at UConn.
The offensive burst from UConn that we have seen this season hardly makes up for how bad they have been on defense. Two straight conference wins have been against weaker quarterbacks – nothing like the ability of Lock.
NCAA Football Handicapping Trends
- Connecticut is 5-20-3 ATS in their last 28 games against a team with a losing record.
- Missouri is 7-3-1 ATS in their last 11 games against a team with a losing record.
- Missouri is 21-9 ATS in their last 30 games on grass.
- Over is 5-2 in Missouri’s last 7 games.
Free Week 9 NCAA Football Pick
It is hard to believe a matchup from 2 years ago that finished 9-6 has a betting total of 77 points this season. But both programs have changed quite a bit since then. Lock should have a day similar to Ferguson against this weak UConn defense.
4* Free NCAA Betting Pick: Missouri -12.5
Take a look at Missouri’s team total over in this one because that is going to be a great play as well – should be around 44. I like the Tigers to outscore the Huskies by a bunch.
