This weekend sees a compelling match-up between two middle powers in the Conference USA, taking place in Birmingham, a resurrected locale for college football in the South. Home team Alabama-Birmingham seems to be rounding into form, while the visiting Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders will look to push their way up the C-USA East division standings.

As recently as two weeks ago, this might have seemed like a walkover, but UAB has shown a lot of gumption in a gutty 23-22 victory over favored Louisiana Tech last week. Middle Tenn. sits at .500 (3-3 record in 2017) while UAB is 3-2. With both squads sporting a .500 conference record to date, this game should be up for grabs.
Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders
The visitors from Murfreesboro (phenomenal town name) are coming off a convincing 37-17 win over Florida International last week. The Raiders’ campiagn has been rather inconsistent so far, after being blown out by Vanderbilt and Minnesota, but securing good wins against Syracuse, Bowling Green, and the aforementioned FIU.

In order to secure a victory on the road, the Raiders will look to sophomore QB John Urzua, who has over 1,000 yards passing and an admirable 67% completion, but also six INTs to just five TD passes. Running back Tavares Thomas really busted out last week, finding the endzone three times versus Florida International.
Diminutive WR Ty Lee has played a great campaign to date, with 35 receptions for 394 yards and three majors. Senior kicker Canon Rooker has also been great, hitting seven of eight FG attempts and knocking in all but one extra-point convert. He can be relied upon if the game is close.
UAB Blazers
It looked for a while like the Blazers were merely getting by on the good vibes of their return to FBS collegiate football, but the one-point win over Tech should have turned some heads. The Blazers used a last-second FG block to defeat the Bulldogs, and they seem to be rolling as they are behind only North Texas in the C-USA West division (who, by the way, only themselves beat UAB by a field goal back in Week 4).

Alabama-Birmingham’s run game was highlighted in last week’s win, especially RB Spencer Brown, who rushed for a career-high 165 yards and a TD. Brown now has 459 rush yards and five TDs in 2017, averaging a decent 5.6 yards per clip. The Blue Raiders will have to game-plan around the freshman.
Elsewhere, the receiving duo of Andre Wilson and Collin Lisa has been impressive for the Blazers, the pair combining for 34 receptions for 580 yards and three TDs. In short, UAB has the weapons to move the ball on Middle Tennessee’s 58th-ranked defense.
Free Week 7 NCAA Football Pick
This is a tough one to call as it could break either way. The Raiders and the Blazers seem fairly evenly matched on paper; what MTSU has in perhaps a slightly better talent base and more established program is equalled by UAB’s gusto for being not just in existence again, but relevant in the conference.
Maybe only because Middle Tennessee has shown it can beat impressive major conference teams and former conference winners (such as the MAC’s Bowling Green), I will call for Middle Tennessee to win this game in a close contest.
4* Free NCAA Betting Pick: MTSU -3.5.
However, if Middle Tennessee are going to leave Birmingham with a win, the Raiders must be extra cautious in containing Brown, as two weeks ago Florida Atlantic RB Devin Singletary rumbled for 133 yards and four TDs. If the Raiders can be more diligent in stuffing the run, I like their chances in the other elements of the game this Saturday evening at Legion Field.
