This Big 10 matchup features the Spartans traveling to Champaign to face the Illini.
Michigan St has seen the bottom fall out on this season, as they are in the midst of a 5 game losing streak. Illinois has a 4 game losing streak of their own after losing to Purdue last week.
Michigan St. Spartans
Sporadic quarterback play has been one of the reasons Michigan St has lost 5 in a row. In last week’s rivalry game against Michigan starting QB Tyler O’Conner threw for only 84 and was 7-14 on attempts.

Facing one of the most talented teams in the country on both sides of the ball, it would have made more sense to throw the ball and not get beat by the Wolverines talented front seven.
I expect O’Conner to have a good bounce back game.
LJ Scott has had his 2 best performances in the last 2 weeks. Against the Wolverines he carried the ball 22 times for 139 yards and a score.
This week the level talent takes a significant drop, so I look for Scott to get another 20+ touches but finish with over 150 rushing yards.
RJ Shelton was the only bright spot in the passing game against Michigan.
He caught 2 passes for 57 yards and is the go to receiver for O’Conner. I expect a big game from him facing a weak Illini secondary.

The Spartans defense has been terrible during this 5 game losing streak, giving up an average of 34 points per game.
If the team has any chance of salvaging the season and possibly earning a bowl bid at 6-6, the defense needs to clamp down and earn each victory one week at a time.
ILLINOIS Fighting Illini
Jeff George Jr’’s first two starts have not looked promising to the Illinois fan base. Last week in the loss to Purdue he was 16-34 for only 156 yards and a touchdown.
He was also sacked 2 times for 20 yards. Michigan St’s defense has given up a ton of points this year, but I don’t think George Jr has the skills to light up any defense, especially not a talented one having a bad year.
Kendrick Foster’s strong play has seemed to fizzle out.
After averaging 5.6 yards per carry 2 weeks ago against Michigan, he followed that performance up with 7 carries for 21 yards against the Boilermakers.
If the Illini have any shot at winning this one he will need to get the ball 15-20 times. The fact that the QB has been wildly inaccurate in his 2 starts means the Spartans will load up the box.

The good news for the Illini defense is that they only gave up 283 total yards to Minnesota in the loss last week.
The bad news is that the offense’s turnovers forced them to play a shorter field, which resulted in easy touchdowns for the Golden Gophers.
If Illinois can limit the turnovers the defense might have a chance to shut down the Spartan passing attack. However I don’t see the defense playing to good games in a row.
